HANOVER, N.H. (12/6/14) - Junior Jaimie McDonell and sophomore Audrey Potts scored twice each as the Princeton women's hockey team defeated Dartmouth 5-2 on Saturday at Thompson Arena.
The Tigers took a 2-0 goal lead in the first period before the Big Green tied it up with two goals in the second. Princeton's offense exploded in the third with three straight goals to end a six-game losing skid against its first non-ranked opponent in six games.
Junior Kelsey Koelzer put the Tigers on the board at 3:43 with the first of two unassisted goals. She picked up a loose puck in the opposite end and skated past three forwards before slipping between the two defenders and flipping a backhanded shot past Dartmouth's where she flipped a backhanded shot past Dartmouth netminder Robyn Chemago.
McDonell made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal right before the buzzer sounded to conclude the first period. She intercepted a break out at the blue line, skated into the left circle and ripped a shot five hole from the hash marks.
A Dartmouth power-play goal came at 1:04 of the second. A shot by Emma Korbs in the high slot was padded away by Princeton's Kimberly Newell but the rebound popped out to the left side to Ailish Forfar who slipped the puck in between Newell and the left pipe.
Karlee Odland tied the game at 14:32 with an unassisted tally. A Princeton defender tried to bank off the side boards, but Odland got to it first. She skated in, took a shot, picked up the rebound and moved it across the paint to put it in on the open side.
The third period was all Tigers.
Sophomore Hilary Lloyd received a long pass up the ice from Koelzer. Llod slotted the pass for sohomore Molly Contini who rifled a shot that came off the pad of Chemago but McDonell was on the doorstep for the backhanded flip and her first career two-goal game.
Potts scored twice within 6:07 the first at 2:07 with help from sophomore Morgan Sly and freshman Emily Achterkirch. Achterkirch won the puck along the boards and shoveled it into the corner for Sly. Sly saw Potts unguarded on the doorstep and she buried the goal. Her second goal came at 8:14 with Sly against assisting and freshman Kiersten Falck getting credit for the secondary assist. Sly skated into the corner and facing a trap moved the puck to Falck. Once free Falck passed back to Sly who skated behind the goal, wrapped around and put the puck in the paint for Potts. The goals were Potts second and third of the season and her career.
Newell made 26 saves in the win, while Chemago stopped 16 shots.
Dartmouth was 1 for 2 on the power play, while Princeton was 0 for 2.
The Tigers take a break for the holidays and return to action on Jan. 2 & 3 when they travel to Rensselaer and Union.
