| Needing a win to keep pace with Harvard atop the Ivy League, Yale narrowly did just that Saturday night in New Haven, getting a putback from Justin Sears with 4.4 seconds left in overtime to win 66-65. Neither team started out well, as the two combined to go 0-13 from the field (Princeton 0-7) over the game's first five-plus minutes. Five Yale turnovers over that span compounded the missed shots to hurt the Bulldogs as Princeton got out to a 7-0 lead. Yale soon found its stroke, but the Bulldogs ended up committing 13 turnovers just in the first period. Yale answered Princeton's 7-0 start with an 11-0 run of its own, and the teams battled from there until Princeton end the half by scoring the period's final 10 points. Until T.J. Bray hit a 3-pointer with three seconds before the break, Princeton saw 11 straight points scored by freshmen, with four apiece for Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz and three for Steven Cook. Princeton led by 11 at 34-23 with little more than two minutes gone in the second half when Yale answered with a 12-2 run to cut it to a one-point Princeton lead, and neither team led by more than five points from there. Princeton scored the last five points of the extra period to send it to OT at 56-56, but after the Tigers led by three at 65-62 inside of a minute to go, Princeton didn't score again. Princeton had two possessions after that point, seeing one end on a turnover on an overthrown pass from the backcourt and the other end without the Tigers able to get off a shot after Sears' go-ahead putback. |
