PRINCETON, N.J. – The 19th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team extended its win streak to five games with a 4-2 victory over Brown University on Goldberger Family Field.
Erasing an early 1-0 deficit, the Tigers improved to 7-4 (4-0 Ivy) on the season and 30-8-1 all-time against the Bears (6-7, 1-3 Ivy). Princeton returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 18 against No. 1 Syracuse.
Wasting little time getting on the board, Brown jumped out to an early lead in the game's opening minutes. Putting the contest's first shot on goal, Jaclyn Torres forced an Anya Gersoff save. Corralling the rebound at the right post, Hannah Rogers slipped a quick shot past a sprawling Gersoff at 2:24 to put the Bears in front.
Coming right back, the Tigers netted a pair of goals just 1:45 apart. Making a run to the front of the net, Elizabeth George redirected a Jane Donio-Enscoe feed past Brown goalkeeper Katie Hammaker at 12:53. Moments later Donio-Enscoe broke the deadlock, putting away a rebound off a Hailey Reeves shot following a penalty corner at 14:38.
Taking advantage of a penalty corner of its own in the 18th minute, Brown came up with the equalizer. Holding the ball at the top of the circle, Alexis Miller sent a pass toward the right post. Getting a stick on the feed, Katherine Kallergis tapped it home at 17:35 to cap off a flurry of action.
With just over a minute left in the first half, the Tigers earned their sixth penalty corner of the period. Stopping Sophia Tornetta's insert, Elise Wong looked to set up Teresa Benvenuti. With Benvenuti slapping a shot toward goal, Maddie Copeland redirected the try past Hammaker at 34:00 to give Princeton a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission.
Looking to catch the Tigers on a counter with just under 24 minutes to play, Brown played a long hit toward Ellie Seid. In a foot race with the freshman striker, Reeves was the first to get a stick on the pass, tapping it to Wong before Seid could put a shot on goal.
Hoping to add to its tally, Princeton pushed forward with less than 20 minutes remaining in regulation. Tracking down a loose ball in front, Ryan McCarthy backhanded a shot toward net that found Hammaker's pads. Playing the rebound on the right side, Cat Caro once again tested the freshman goalie, who blocked away the try to keep Brown within striking distance.
Still looking to tie it approaching the 10-minute mark, Brown earned its third penalty corner of the day but could not put a shot on goal. Carrying the ball up the left side moments later, Caro played it across of the face of the goal before reaching the endline. Once again carving out space in front, George tapped in her second of the afternoon at 60:53 to help seal the win.
Princeton, which did not allow a shot on goal in the second half, finished with a 19-8 shot advantage and an 11-3 edge in penalty corners. Gersoff made two saves in the win, while Hammaker finished with four stops.
