CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Maddie Copeland netted a pair of second half scores to lift the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Harvard at Jordan Field.
Facing a 1-0 deficit, Copeland put in a pair of goals in the 58th and 67th minutes, respectively, to help the Tigers improve to 8-5 (5-0 Ivy) on the season. Princeton returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 25 at No. 2 UConn.
Pushing forward in the eighth minute, Harvard created the game's first good scoring opportunity. Dribbling past a couple of Princeton defenders, Kathleen Young came across the face of the goal and looked to have an open net, but could not put a shot on target. Moments later, Sarah Finnemore put the contest's first shot on goal following a penalty corner, forcing an Anya Gersoff save.
Playing Teresa Benvenuti in, Sophia Tornetta got a Princeton counter started in the 16th minute. Carrying it up the middle of the field, Benvenuti sent a centering pass to Copeland on the doorstep of the Harvard cage, but senior goalkeeper Issy Davies made a sliding save on the Tigers' striker.
After having a goal disallowed in the 19th minute, Harvard continued to keep the pressure on, breaking through at 23:32. With the Crimson earning consecutive penalty corners, Young broke the scoreless deadlock, putting in a rebound off an Elizabeth Jacobson shot to give Harvard an early lead.
Hoping to turn the tide, Princeton controlled possession for the remainder of the half. Testing Davies in the 27th minute, Hailey Reeves put a hard shot on target following a penalty corner, finding the senior's pads. After hitting the side of the Crimson cage with a shot at 29:40, McCarthy forced Davies to make another stop in the 31st minute with a quick shot from the right side.
Still looking for the equalizer with just over 20 minutes to play, Princeton earned its eighth penalty corner of the afternoon. Playing the insert at the top of the circle, Elise Wong set up a Reeves shot that found its way into the Harvard cage before being disallowed.
Going on the offensive in the 58th minute, the Tigers pulled even. Getting the penalty corner started, Tornetta played the insert to Wong at the top of the circle. Making a run toward the cage, Copeland redirected Wong's shot in front, beating Davies at 57:52 to make it 1-1.
With Young missing out on an opportunity to put Harvard on top following a long run up the left side of the Tigers' defense, Princeton earned its 10th penalty corner of the day. Once again carving out space in front, Copeland tipped in McCarthy's shot from the left side at 66:17 to put the Tigers up for good.
Princeton finished with a 16-4 shot advantage and a 10-4 edge in penalty corners. Davies finished with five saves, while Gersoff made one stop.
