PRINCETON, N.J. (11/14/15) – A three-goal third period propelled the No. 8 Quinnipiac women's hockey team to a 4-2 win over No. 10 Princeton in Game 2 of the home-and-home series today at historic Hobey Baker Rink. The teams played to a 1-1 draw yesterday in Hamden.
Princeton took a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period and maintained the lead after 40 minutes, 2-1.
"I thought the games were pretty equal but different at the same time," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "They came out hard on us yesterday but then got on them at the end. But today we came out hard on them but we didn't keep our foot on the pedal for all 60 minutes. For the start of each period, for the first five minutes of the second and third periods, they really crushed us - and they happen to score a couple of goals on us there at the end. We had a few physical lapses which messes with us a little mentally, and we get a little weird for a little while, but when we were down we started to battle back and we fought hard in the end."
Last year's leading scorer Molly Contini scored her first goal of her junior season, with help from sophomore Kiersten Falck. Falck intercepted a pass and took her defender to the goal and then fired on netminder Sydney Rossman who made the save and pushed it aside. The skaters converged on the puck and it was Contini that got to it and shot through traffic for the goal at 18:43.
Taylar Cianfarano knotted it at 1-1 at 7:31 of the second. Taryn Baumgardt knocked down a Kelsey Koelzer clearance and sent a cross-ice pass to Cianfarano who went five-hole on Kimberly Newell, as it slowly trickled underneath her.
Quinnipiac started to gain momentum in the second period, with shots standing 7-4, but got held up by a Cassidy Tucker goal at 16:11. Tucker took a shot from inside the right circle, on a quick transition and Rossman pushed the shot aside with her stick but it deflected off of Roesler and into the net.
The Bobcats came out of the third again with energy and quickly gained the lead with two goals that came one minute and 40 seconds apart. Nicole Brown worked the puck up the right wall to Baumgardt at the right point. She sent the puck across the ice to Roesler who took a one-timer just as Fiona McKenna attempted to block the shot.
Brown made it 3-2 after a give-and-go with Nicole Kosta as the paired prevented a Princeton breakout.
The Tigers called timeout to regroup and thing started to even out. Princeton finished the period with a 9-6 shot advantage.
Princeton put the extra skater on with 1:45 to play but then a penalty was assessed to the Tigers just eight seconds later and Newell had to return to the pipes. She came off again with 1:20 to play – finishing the game with 18 saves. The best scoring chance for the Tigers came from defender Kelsey Koelzer – a riffle from the left point.
Roesler sealed the win with a power-play, empty-net goal with eight seconds left with Emma Woods earning the assist on the play.
Princeton was 0 for 2 on the power play and 3 for 4 on the penalty kill.
Rossman made 18 saves in goal for the Bobcats, who improve to 7-1-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the league.
Princeton is now 5-2-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the ECAC. The Tigers will be on the road the next two weekends. First up is St. Lawrence and Clarkson on Nov. 20 & 21.
