• Princeton and Miami will be meeting 67 years to the day after the teams last met for the last of a two-game set in Miami on Dec. 28 and 29, 1948. The teams split the meetings, Miami winning by two points, 37-35, in the first game and Princeton winning 62-55 in double overtime the next day.
• Princeton will be making its seventh all-time trip to Florida, a state in which the Tigers hold a 4-6 record. Princeton split the two games with Miami in 1948, fell to Syracuse and Army in a Miami-hosted event in 1963, fell to Florida International just to the northwest of Miami's campus in 2001, split with Northeastern (win) and UCF at a UCF-hosted event in 2010, fell to Kentucky in Tampa in the 2011 NCAA first round, and swept games at Florida State and Florida A&M in the team's most recent visit to Florida over the New Year's holiday in 2011-12.
• Miami hasn't faced an Ivy League team since defeating Penn in 2008. The 'Canes are 17-9 all-time against the Ivy, but all but two of those games took place prior to 2001.
• Princeton is 14-27 all-time against ACC teams at the time of the game. This will be the first time Princeton and Miami have met since the Hurricanes left the Big East for the ACC in 2004. Fifteen of Princeton's 42 games against the ACC have come against Duke, six were come against Maryland, and six apiece were against North Carolina and N.C. State. The Tigers have faced Virginia, Wake Forest and Florida State between two and four times each, while the teams have been in the ACC.
• The last time the Tigers defeated a team ranked as highly by the AP as No. 13 Miami was Jan. 3, 1977, when Princeton defeated No. 2 Notre Dame 76-62 in Jadwin Gym. Princeton last defeated a team ranked as highly as 13th away from Jadwin on Dec. 29, 1975 in a win over No. 8 Alabama at Maryland. It last happened in a true road game on Jan. 2, 1967, when the Tigers won at No. 3 North Carolina, 91-81. The Tigers have met top-13 teams 34 times since that Notre Dame game in 1977, most recently on Dec. 19 at then-No. 6 Maryland, but the ranked foe has taken all of those games.
• Miami coach Jim Larrañaga has been coaching collegiately since 1971, but he's coached against Princeton at only one of his stops, and more than four decades ago. Princeton and Davidson, where Larrañaga was an assistant coach from 1971-76, split four games between 1972 and '74.
• The Tigers will have a tough task in looking to knock off the Hurricanes, who were ranked 13th by the AP and 15th by the coaches in the Dec. 28 rankings. Miami has had just one loss this season, to Northeastern in Miami by a single point, 78-77, on Nov. 27. Of Miami's 10 wins, nine have come by double digits, and the only exception was a 77-72 overtime win at Nebraska in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Dec. 1. The Hurricanes are coming off a blowout 95-49 win not too far from Princeton, against La Salle at The Palestra, while the Tigers were taking care of Bucknell last Tuesday night.
• In the Hurricanes' lone loss to Northeastern, the Huskies went 12 of 22 (.545) from 3-point range, and Princeton averages going 9 of 27 from distance this season. That performance was anomalous for Miami opponents this season, as the Hurricanes average holding foes to a .348 clip from beyond the arc. Northeastern also held Miami to 6 of 17 (.353) from distance, well below Miami's average clip of .417 (8 of 20).
• Another key for Northeastern in its win at Miami was rebounding. The Huskies only outboarded the Hurricanes 33-30, but that was far better than most opponents have fared against Miami this season. The Hurricanes, led by Tonye Jekiri (10.3 rpg), are outrebounding opponents by nearly eight boards a game, 38.7 to 30.9. Miami had just six offensive rebounds in the game, and Northeastern outdid Miami in second-chance points 9-7. The 3-point shooting and the rebounding were enough to overcome Miami outscoring Northeastern in the paint 50-18 and the Hurricanes outshooting the Huskies 54.2 percent to 46.3 percent.
• The 50-18 points-in-the-paint stat doesn't take into account the big free throw advantage Northeastern had, getting to the line 22 times (making 16) to just nine (making seven) for Miami. The Hurricanes were whistled 21 times to 14 for Northeastern. Those stats have also gone Princeton's way on the season overall, with Princeton drawing a foul fewer per game (17.5) than their foes (18.5) and taking three more free throws (20.6) than opponents (17.0) per game.
• Princeton will be the second Ivy League team to face Miami at the BankUnited Center, as the Hurricanes beat Penn 88-62 on Jan. 2, 2008. The BUC opened in January 2003 and moved the 'Canes hoopsters back on campus after the team played at the Miami Arena from 1988-2002.
• If Miami were the visitors for Tuesday's game instead of the host, it'd be a homecoming for Ewing native and Princeton Day School alum Davon Reed. Last Tuesday's Hurricanes game against La Salle at The Palestra, where the Tigers will be Jan. 9, was a homecoming for Hurricane sophomore Ja'Quan Newton, who is from Philadelphia.
• Princeton has quite a few top-three statistical rankings in the Ivy League heading into Monday's games. Princeton is ranked first in defensive rebounding percentage, second in scoring offense, scoring margin, rebounding offense, rebounding margin, steals, assist-to-turnover ratio, defensive rebounds and 3s per game, and third in field goal percentage, rebounding offense and turnover margin.
• Entering Saturday's games, Princeton was in the top 10 percent nationally (top 34) in two statistical categories, including fewest turnovers (13th, 112) and fewest fouls (17th, 175). Amir Bell, Henry Caruso, Devin Cannady, Pete Miller and Spencer Weisz combined for 19 top-250 individual rankings, led by Cannady's No. 10 ranking in field goal percentage at .926.
• Princeton's 76.67 ppg average isn't far from the team record for a season-ending scoring average of 79.74, set in 1971-72.
• Under Mitch Henderson, Princeton has scored 90 points in a game five times. That's more than all other post-Pete Carril coaches combined and the fourth-most under a coach in program history. Princeton scored 90+ 21 times under Pete Carril, 18 times under Butch van Breda Kolff and 11 times under Cappy Cappon.
• Henry Caruso is on pace to score 498 points this season (28 games), which would be the most at Princeton since Ian Hummer scored 515 points in 32 games in 2011-12. He has also surpassed his total from all of last season, 176. He scored three points as a rookie. Caruso has also surged into the team lead in rebounding at 7.2 rpg and has three double-doubles this season, the first three of his career.
• Princeton's top six scorers - Henry Caruso, Steven Cook, Devin Cannady, Spencer Weisz, Amir Bell and Pete Miller - have scored 621 of the team's 766 points this season, or 81.1 percent.
• Princeton has shot .400 or better from the field eight times in the 10 games this season and is 7-1 in those games (loss vs. Maryland). Princeton is 0-2 when not shooting at least .400.
• The number of 3-pointers Princeton makes hasn't been a predictor of wins so far this season. The Tigers are 3-2 when they make at least 10 3s and 4-1 when they make fewer than 10.
• Princeton's juniors (Caruso, Cook, Miller, Rayner, Weisz) have scored 459 of the team's 766 points, or 59.9 percent. Players who are able to return next year have scored 99.5 percent of the team's points (762 of 766).
• At 17.8 points per game, Henry Caruso is close to being on track to average the most points per game for any Tiger at season's end since Brian Taylor averaged 25.0 ppg in 1971-72. T.J. Bray averaged 18.0 ppg two seasons ago.
• Princeton has had seven double-doubles this season, including three in one game at Lipscomb, the first time that has happened in program history. Princeton's seven double-doubles this season, by four players (Caruso 3, Cook, Miller, Weisz 2) have already surpassed last year's five, which were all by Hans Brase. Princeton had seven double-doubles by four players in 2013-14 and 10 double-doubles by three players in 2010-11. Twenty-six double-doubles, by the 1964-65 and 1966-67 team, is the program record.
• Caruso's classmate, Pete Miller, has 61 rebounds through the first 10 games and is closing in on his total from last season, 74. Miller averaged 2.3 boards a game as a rookie and 2.4 as a sophomore but is averaging 6.1 this year.
• This will be the sixth and final Ivy-ACC game of the regular season. Cornell played three of the first five, falling to Syracuse, Pitt and Georgia Tech, while Duke beat Yale and Boston College beat Harvard.

• Miami was one of the last teams to hang up its sneakers last season, falling to Stanford in the NIT final on April 2. The team reached the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament before falling to Notre Dame and getting chosen for the NIT, where victories over North Carolina Central, Alabama, Chris Mooney '94-coached Richmond and Temple followed.
• Eleven Hurricanes started a game last season with only Sheldon McClellan, who started all 38 games and is back this year, and Tonye Jekiri, who started all 37 in which he played, starting more than 29 of the 38 games. McClellan, Jekiri, Angel Rodriguez, Davon Reed and Manu Lecomte all started at least 21 games and all except Lecomte are back this season.
• McClellan (6-5), Rodriguez (5-11), Reed (6-6), Jekiri (7-0) and Kamari Murphy (6-8) have started the last five games for the Hurricanes, while Ivan Cruz Uceda, who started the first six before Murphy moved into that spot, scored 20 points off the bench to lead all scorers last time out against La Salle.
• Miami was the preseason No. 5 pick in the 15-team ACC, behind UNC, Virginia, Duke and Notre Dame. Miami received votes in the preseason AP and coaches polls, but no Hurricanes were selected to the ACC's two preseason all-conference teams.
• The Hurricanes broke into the AP and coaches polls on Nov. 23 and have remained, ranking 13th in the AP poll and 16th in the coaches as of Dec. 21.
• The stats suggest Miami won't be giving the game away from the free-throw line. Miami's .774 clip at the stripe was the eighth-best in the nation entering Saturday's games, one of 10 categories in which the Hurricanes were in the top 10 percent in the nation (top 34). The other categories were defensive rebounds per game (33rd, 29.0), fewest turnovers (34th, 123), field goal percentage (10th, .507), free throws made (28th, 222), rebounding margin (32nd, +7.8), scoring margin (10th, +19.5), scoring offense (10th, 86.1 ppg), 3-pt FG percentage (15th, .417) and winning percentage (11th, .909).
• Individually, Angel Rodriguez, Tonye Jekiri, Sheldon McClellan, Ja'Quan Newton and Davon Reed combined for 20 top-250 rankings headed into Saturday's games. Jekiri's 7.55 defensive rebounds per game were 14th nationally, the top individual ranking for the 'Canes across all the statistical categories.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his fifth season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 81-49. Under Henderson, Princeton is 46-11 at home, 37-19 in the Ivy League, and 23-5 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 65-16 when leading at the half under Henderson. Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first four campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Leuhring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04). Henderson is in seventh place on the Princeton all-time wins list. Bill Carmody, who was a Princeton assistant for Henderson's first two seasons and head coach for Henderson's last two, is in sixth place with 92 wins. Carmody hired Henderson as an assistant coach at Northwestern in 2000, where Henderson remained for 11 seasons until coming to Princeton. Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95. Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14. Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield). |
