Stony Brook made its first six field goals of the game and held on to that lead throughout Saturday afternoon on Long Island as Princeton took its first loss of the season, 91-77.
The Seawolves' Jameel Warney, the back-to-back America East Player of the Year, finished with 26 points, 15 rebounds, nine blocks and five assists a year after he had 12 points and 13 boards in Princeton's 77-64 win in Jadwin. That day, the Tigers had four players in double figures, led by Steven Cook's career-high 28, but there was no big number to lead Princeton in the rematch despite four Tigers again getting 10-plus points. Rayshawn McGrew, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds in last year's meeting, was key again for the Seawolves, repeating his 18-point performance.
Henry Caruso and Devin Cannady co-led Princeton with 16 points apiece, with Cannady's representing 16 of Princeton's 21 points off the bench.
Princeton started the game 2 of 9 from the field, and although Princeton was within five at 35-30 with less than three minutes to go in the first frame, Stony Brook closed the half on a 6-0 run to take an 11-point lead into the break.
Although the Tigers started the second half on a 9-0 run to pull within two, Stony Brook answered right back and went on to lead by as many as 14 points, also the final margin. Behind Warney's 15 rebounds, Stony Brook controlled the glass, 41-28, and didn't fall far from its opening hot streak from the field, finishing with 63.5 percent shooting for the game. Princeton ended with a 36.5 percent clip.
The Tigers will have a quick turnaround before their next game, heading to Saint Joseph's Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip.
