PRINCETON, N.J. (12/5/15) - The Princeton women's hockey team won its fourth straight game and finished the weekend with a perfect four points after a 4-1 win over Dartmouth this afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
For the second straight game Princeton's forwards struggled to score goals despite putting a lot of pressure on an opponent. But when they finally broke through today at Hobey Baker Rink against Dartmouth they did so in a big way.
Less than 24 hours after coming back from a 1-0 deficit and winning 2-1 in overtime against No. 7 Harvard, the Tigers scored three second-period goals in a span of four minutes en route to a 4-1 come-from-behind win.
Freshman Karlie Lund scored one goal with two assists and senior goalie Kimberly Newell recorded 30 saves to lead Princeton (9-4-1, 5-4-1 ECAC Hockey).
Moments after Dartmouth's Laura Stacey scored on the power play to give the Big Green a shortlived 1-0 lead with 10:03 left in the second period, the Tigers' line of Morgan Sly, Lund, and Molly Contini responded with a pair of goals just 33 seconds later.
Sly scored her fifth of the year off a nice passing play from Lund and Contini to make it 1-1 with 9:30 to play in the middle period. While the crowd and the Princeton bench was still celebrating, the Tigers took the for good lead when Lund scored on a rebound off Kelsey Koelzer's shot with 8:57 left.
Cassidy Tucker scored her fourth of the year to make it 3-1 with 4:50 remaining in the second. The junior snapped a quick shot just inside the left post off a cross ice feed from Hillary Lloyd, with Lund getting the secondary assist. The puck hit just inside the post and the officials went to a video review before upholding the score.
The game was one of the more physical contests of the year, with both teams receiving six minor penalties each. The Tigers, who failed to score on the man-advantage on four opportunities on Friday against Harvard, were 0-for-6 on the power play in today's game.
At least part of that could be attributed to Dartmouth goalie Robyn Chemago. The junior stopped 37 of 40 shots to keep her team in the game.
Lloyd sealed the win with 35 seconds left in the third, scoring into an empty net moments after the Tigers had killed off their fifth penalty while Dartmouth enjoyed a six-on-four advantage with Chemago pulled for the extra attacker.
With the four-point weekend the Tigers move into a second place tie with Harvard at 11 points, seven points behind first-place Quinnipiac - following the Crimson's 2-1 overtime loss at Quinnipiac today. Harvard has played one fewer game than Princeton.
Following a non-conference home series with Penn State next weekend the Tigers are off until 2016. Princeton faces Brown on New Year's night and plays Yale the following afternoon to complete a lengthy six-game homestand.
