HAMDEN, Conn. (2/227/15) – On the one hand, the Princeton women's hockey team picked a bad time to play its worst period of the season. On the other hand, the season didn't end because of it.
Princeton fell behind big early and dropped the first game of its ECAC quarterfinal playoff series against No. 6 ranked Quinnipiac 7-0. The Bobcats led 4-0 at the end of the first period.
This is a best-of-three, though, so Princeton goes back to 0-0 for Saturday's Game 2, which is now a must-win to keep its season alive.
“I told them we need to play with more grit and be more aggressive” Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said after the game. “And we can't play hockey if we don't have the hockey puck.”
The Bobcats averaged 1.30 goals per game in the last 13 games, after starting the season averaging 3.08 goals per game as it began the season 20-1-3. It's offense came alive tonight.
In the opening frame, the Bobcats scored twice within 2:50, then twice more within 1:12. It was the first time Quinnipiac scored four goals in the first period since Oct. 21, 2009 and the first time Princeton allowed four goals in the first period since a year ago December at Minnesota.
Sophomore Emma Woods opened the game with a wrap-around goal at 6:04 that had to be reviewed before being called a solid goal. Leading scorer Taylar Cianfarano had a pretty goal at 8:54 when junior Nicole Connery found her open in the slot. Lindsey West expanded on the lead at 15:16 when she whipped a shot from the left point over the glove shoulder of Kimberly Newell and two minutes later Erica Uden Johansson scored from the opposite point on the power play.
Cianfarano notched her second goal of the afternoon, going top shelf at 3:32 in the second period – the only goal of the middle frame.
Shiann Darkangelo net her own rebound after a hard strike from the top of the right circle she got the bouncing rubber and this time converted the shot.
Newell finished the game with 37 saves.
Chelsea Laden earned her 15th shutout of the season, making 13 stops as Princeton was outshot 44-13.
Game 2 is set for 3 p.m., tomorrow afternoon at TD Bank Sports Center.
