ANNAPOLIS, Md. - While the women's basketball team was making history in one part of Maryland, the Princeton baseball team created some dramatics of its own in another. A two-run comeback in the seventh inning led the Tigers to a 4-3 win over Navy in the first game of a doubleheader at Max Bishop Stadium in Annapolis.
Navy came back with a 4-2 victory in the second game.
GAME ONE: Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh innings — the teams played seven in the first game of the doubleheader, Princeton got an inning-opening double to left-centerfield from Tyler Servais and a triple to rightfield by Danny Baer to draw even and move the go-ahead run 90 feet away.
Following a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Billy Arendt gave Princeton the lead with a sacrifice fly to rightfield, which scored Baer. That would be enough for senior reliever Nick Donatiello, who allowed only one single over two innings to earn his first victory of the season.
Baer came into the game hitting only .158, but he found his offense at an opportune time for the Tigers. The centerfielder went 3-for-3, including the game-tying hit in the seventh, while Arendt ended the game with three RBIs. Like his final one, each of his first two RBIs gave Princeton a one-run lead; his third-inning groundout scored Servais, while his single down the rightfield line scored Baer in the fifth inning.
Sophomore Chad Powers pitched well in the no-decision, allowing only five hits and three runs over five innings. He struck out two batters in Princeton's second victory of the season.
GAME TWO: Despite a 4-for-4 performance from Nick Hernandez, Navy rode a three-run fifth inning to a 4-2 win in the nightcap.
The Midshipmen had four straight hits to open the fifth inning of a scoreless game, then scored an extra run on a wild pitch to grab a 3-0 lead.
Both Hernandez and Paul Tupper had RBIs for Princeton, who will be back in Annapolis Sunday for another doubleheader with the Midshipmen starting at noon.
Both Arendt and Peter Owens had multiple-hit games for the Tigers, who got runs in both the sixth and eighth innings, but were never able to even the score after the fifth inning.
