Men's Basketball to Honor '65 Final Four Team Saturday
March 05, 2015 | Men's Basketball
The 1965 Princeton men's basketball team that was the first in Ivy League history to advance to the Final Four will be honored at halftime of Saturday's 6 p.m. game against Columbia as the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Final Four nears.
All but two members of the 1965 team will be attending this weekend's events, which include a team luncheon and reception. They will be joined on court during halftime of Saturday's game by Ford Family Director of Athletics Mollie Marcoux '91, whose predecessor Gary Walters '67 was the point
guard of the 1965 team, and two daughters of the late Butch van Breda Kolff, the head coach of the 1965 Tigers.
Princeton opened the tournament with an East Regional quarterfinal win over Penn State before beating North Carolina State and AP No. 4 Providence 109-69 to win the region.
The Tigers then lined up against No. 1 Michigan in the national semifinal, where the Wolverines advanced 93-76. Princeton then defeated Wichita State 118-82 in the third-place game with Bill Bradley '65 scoring 58 points.
Bradley's remains the highest-scoring total in a Final Four game while standing as the most points in an NCAA Tournament game until 1970. It is still the second-highest single-game total in tournament history.
Princeton finished 23-6 that year, setting what was then a program record for wins. The team's 2,311 points, 882 field goals, 545 free throws and 1,334 rebounds remain program records.
