PRINCETON, N.J. – The 15th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team gave No. 9 Virginia all it could handle on Sunday afternoon before falling in overtime, 4-3.
Down 3-2 in the waning moments of regulation, the Cavaliers' Caleigh Foust netted the equalizer with just 50 seconds on the clock. With time winding down in the first overtime period, UVA struck again, with Tara Vittese finding Greta Ell for the game winner at 84:51.
Virginia finished with a 28-15 shot advantage, while Princeton held an 11-9 edge in penalty corners. Hailey Reeves, Cat Caro, and Sophia Tornetta accounted for the three Tiger scores, while Anya Gersoff matched a career high with 14 saves.
Testing Gersoff early, UVA put five shots on goal in the first eight minutes. Generating Princeton's first scoring chance, Maddie Copeland hit a shot toward an empty cage in the 15th minute, only to be denied by back Laura Schnatmeier. Earning a penalty corner on the play, Copeland played the insert to Elise Wong. Stopping it for Reeves, Wong picked up an assist on Reeves' hit that found its way into the left side of the UVA net at 15:19.
Pushing forward in the 29th minute, the Cavaliers answered. Racing upfield, Vittese played a ball to Ell to the right of the Princeton cage. Sending it toward the backpost, Ell gave it right back to a streaking Vittese for UVA's first tally.
Putting the pressure on early in the second half, the Tigers earned five-consecutive penalty corners, but ultimately came up empty. Taking advantage of a penalty corner of their own, Foust set up Izzy McDonough for the go-ahead goal at 47:19. Just two minutes later, Princeton tied it as Caro powered a shot from the top of the circle into the back of the UVA cage following a penalty corner.
Looking for the would-be game winner in the 61st minute, Reeves put a hard shot on goal that was knocked down by the Cavaliers' Emily Faught. With a penalty stroke awarded on the play, Tornetta calmly beat UVA goalkeeper Carrera Lucas to make it 3-2. Still 3-2 with under a minute to play, Lucy Hyams caught Princeton on a counter, linking up with Foust for the game-tying goal with just 50 seconds left in regulation.
Continuing to apply pressure early in the overtime period, Foust put a shot on target toward an empty net that Tornetta turned away at the goaline. In the 81st minute, Tornetta again foiled Foust on another empty net opportunity. With under 10 seconds remaining in the first extra session, Riley Tata carried it up the right side. Receiving a pass in front of the Tiger cage, Vittese found Ell on the backpost for the game winner at 84:51.
Equaling her total from yesterday's loss to No. 2 North Carolina, Gersoff recorded 14 saves. Playing the first half, UVA's Rebecca Holden made one save, while Lucas finished with two stops in 49:51 minutes.
Princeton returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12 against Bucknell.
