Koelzer Nets Hat Trick in 6-1 Win Over Brown

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/1/16) - Junior defender Kelsey Koelzer net her first career hat trick as the Princeton women's hockey team won its seventh straight game defeating Brown 6-1 on New Year's Day at Hobey Baker Rink.
It marked the first game for the Tigers in 20 days, but the break had no affect on the squad as it picked up right where it left off. Princeton improves to 12-4-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the ECAC to take over sole possession of second place in the standings.
Ten different players had a point, led by Koelzer's hat trick. She is the first Princeton defender to collect a hat trick since All-America Sasha Sherry had one on Feb. 12, 2011 against Rensselaer. Junior Molly Contini assisted on the first three goals, while junior Jaimie McDonell had a goal and an assists. Junior Fiona McKenna and freshman Stephanie Sucharda chipped in two assists apiece. Senior Kimberly Newell earned the win in net making 12 saves in the first two periods. Sophomore Alysia DaSilva was the closer, stopping all three shots she faced in the third.
Junior Hilary Lloyd opening the scoring at 8:10 of the first period. She picked up a loose puck and backhanded it to Contini, who found McDonell in the slot. Her shot was saved but the rebound bounced to the stick of Lloyd and she capitalized. Two minutes later, Koelzer made it 2-0. She and Contini played catch before Contini hit the trailer in McKenna. McKenna's shot and the rebound found Koelzer for the flip in.
Sam Donovan tallied Brown's lone goal at 17:01 of the first, when she backhanded a top shelf goal from Maddie Wooa nd Abby Niewchas.
The Bears' jubilation would be shortlived as McDonell expanded the lead back to two less than two minutes later. Sucharda kept the puck in the neutral zone and pushed it ahead to McDonell who dropped the puck off for Contini in the left circle. Contini saw the backdoor perfectly, setting up McDonell at 18:46.
Senior Cristin Shanahan scored the only goal of the second period, as she deflected in a rifle from Sucharda at the left point.
Koelzer added her second of the game on the power play at 3:05 with junior Molly Strabley and goaltender DaSilva earning assists. DaSilva settled a dump in and Strabley collected and cycled behind the goal before dishing off to Koelzer at the blue line. Koelzer walked in and ripped a shot as she entered the slot to make it 5-1.
Freshman Karlie Lund set up Koelzer for the final goal at 18:30, after she won the puck off the boards and found Koelzer open at the dot of the left circle and Koelzer roofed in her third goal.
Princeton outshot Brown 51-16 and was 1 for 3 on the power play and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.
The Tigers have now outscored their opponents 29-6 during its seven-game unbeaten streak that dates back to Nov. 27.
The Tigers face Yale tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m., The Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 game to No. 4 Quinnipiac this evening.
