PRINCETON, N.J. (1/2/16) - The Princeton power play exploded scoring three straight goals to lift the women's hockey team to a 5-1 win over Yale on Saturday, Jan. 2 at Hobey Baker Rink.
The Tigers took a 3-0 lead, converting on their first three power-play opportunities, then tacked on two third-period goals.
With its eighth consecutive win, Princeton improves to 13-4-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the ECAC, and remains second in the league standings. The Tigers outscored their opponents 11-2 this weekend, and 34-7 during the 8-0 streak.
Freshman Stephanie Sucharda scored her second goal of the season at 13:17 with a shot from the high slot. Senior Jaimie McDonell had the puck at the right point and fed junior Hilary Lloyd inside the right face-off circle who found Sucharda in the high slot.
Senior Kelsey Koelzer notched her fourth goal of the weekend with 27 seconds left in the first. Lund tipped the puck to Koelzer right in front of Kimberly Newell and Koelzer went in on goal alone and ripped a bottle knocker.
Lund cleaned up a Koelzer rebound at 3:55 of the second, with McDonell earning her second helper of the game and fourth point of the weekend.
Hanna Astrom tallied the fourth power-play goal of the game, the only Bulldog goal of the game at 14:33. After Julia Yetman ripped a shot from between the circles the puck bounced off the boards to Astrom who one-timed the puck into the upper right 90.
Freshman Kimiko Marinacci broke up a pass behind Newell and put the puck on the tape of junior Cassidy Tucker. Tucker and Lund had a give-and-go with Lund putting away a backhanded goal blocker side of Kyra O'Brien - who came in on relief of Hanna Madl.
Junior Fiona McKenna iced the game with an unassisted marker at 19:11 taking a loose puck in the neutral zone and depositing it top shelf.
Newell won her 10th game of the season, making 12 saves in net for the Tigers.
Mandl made 14 saves in the first two period, while O'Brien had two in the final 20 minutes.
Princeton begins a seven-game road stretch next weekend when it travels to Union and Rensselaer on Jan. 8 & 9.
