Newell Backstops No. 9 Tigers to 4-0 Shutout at UConn

STORRS, Conn. (1/25/16) - Senior Kimberly Newell earned her third shutout of the season as she backstopped the No. 9 ranked Princeton women's hockey team to a 4-0 victory at Connecticut on Monday evening.
Newell made 20 saves as Princeton won its 11th straight game to improve to 16-4-3 overall. It marked the Tigers first game in more than two weeks, as the Orange & Black returned from final exams.
Junior Morgan Sly had a goal and an assist, as four different skaters scored goals. Junior Hilary Lloyd opened the scoring at 9:36 with her sixth of the season, before Sly pushed the lead to 2-0 at the close of the third.
Senior defender Kelsey Koelzer tallied the lone goal of the second period, her team-leading 13th goal on the power play. Special teams were on display as six penalties were called in the period.
Junior Cassidy Tucker finished off the scoring with her eighth goal of the season at 11:54 of the third with Sly and freshman Stephanie Sucharda chipping in.
Annie Belanger made 38 saves in the loss for the Huskies, who fall to 9-12-5 on the season, as Princeton outshot UConn 42-20.
Princeton was 1 for 4 on the power play and 5 for 5 on the penalty kill. The Tigers continue to have one of college hockey's best penalty-killing units, and are now 77 for 82 (93.9%) - second nationally.
With a 9-4-1 ECAC record and sitting in a two-way tie for second place in the league standings, Princeton heads into the final stretch of conference action this weekend. First up, the Tigers take on Dartmouth on Friday, Jan. 29, followed by Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 30.
