Women's Hockey Welcomes Home Denna Laing '14, Falls 4-2 To Clarkson
November 05, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
Despite the inspiring presence of Princeton's own Denna Laing '14, the Tiger women's hockey team was unable to fend off a 4-2 comeback win by Clarkson Saturday afternoon at Baker Rink. The loss, however, could not dampen the presence of Laing, whose courageous battle following a serious injury has inspired more than just the Princeton program she led so well, but an entire nation.
Laing — pictured in the center with Ali Pankowski '15 (left) and Olivia Mucha '14 (right) — suffered an injury in the first-ever Women's Winter Classic game while playing for the professional Boston Pride last season, but she was on hand Saturday to drop the ceremonial first puck. The Tigers seemed to benefit from her presence, jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead. Senior Cassidy Tucker opened the scoring on Princeton's first power play of the game, deflecting a point shot from Kelsey Koelzer for her third goal of the season 8:47 into the first.
Princeton, which outshot Clarkson 10-5 in the opening period, increased the lead to 2-0 at 12:23. Morgan Sly, who had an assist on Tucker's goal, finished off a nice passing play from Karlie Lund and Tucker for her second goal of the year.
The Tigers had three prime scoring chances on a power play of their own early in the second period, but Clarkson junior goalie Shea Tiley had the answer each time and kept the Golden Knights in the game. Shortly after the Princeton power play Clarkson got on the scoreboard with a power play tally of its own. Junior Loren Gabel scored the first of her two goals from in front of the Tigers' net to give the Golden Knights life and cut the Princeton lead to 2-1. The Golden Knights tied the game at 2-2 with just under eight minutes remaining in the middle stanza when Michaela Pejzlova deflected a point shot from Jessica Gilliam from the left circle for her third goal of the year.
Clarkson sophomore center Kelly Mariani scored the game winner for the Golden Knights at 1:07 of the third, just 15 seconds after returning to the ice after serving a penalty. Clarkson added a late empty-net goal to secure the win. For the game the Golden Knights finished 2-for-6 on the power play while Princeton scored one goal on three power play opportunities.
Alysia DaSilva (3-2-1) stopped 28 of 31 shots while Tiley (8-3-1) recorded 24 saves in net for Clarkson. The Tigers are now 3-2-1 (1-2-1 ECAC) while the Clarkson, after defeating Quinnipiac on Friday night, stands at 8-3-1 and a perfect 4-0-0 in league play.
Former Princeton assistant coach Tony Maci, now an assistant to Clarkson coach Matt Desrosiers, returned to Baker Rink for his first game on the opposition bench.
The Tigers take to the road next weekend, playing at Harvard and Dartmouth before returning to Baker Rink on Friday, November 18th when they host Colgate.
