Princeton may have been the only team in Jadwin Gym Saturday night still in contention for this year's Ivy title, but Cornell wasn't about to let the Tigers get to 20 wins overall and 10 in league play without a battle.
In the Tigers' 74-60 win, Cornell got out to an 11-4 lead as Princeton missed its first six 3-point tries over the first six-plus minutes, and the Big Red held a two-point lead at 22-20 with eight minutes to go before halftime. Though Princeton responded with a 13-4 run to take a nine-point lead, the advantage stood at just three at the break after Cornell's Robert Hatter nailed a 35-footer at the buzzer.
At last, Princeton took charge out of the break. A 20-3 run over the half's first 10 minutes got Princeton's lead to 20, and it stood at 21 with four-plus minutes to go before Cornell made a later run to whittle the deficit to as few as 12 points.
Cornell shot 55.6 percent for the opening half before cooling off to a 32.3 percent clip after the break. Princeton flipped that, shooting an even 40 percent before the break and 57.7 percent after halftime.
Spencer Weisz and Amir Bell co-led the Tigers with 16 points apiece, with Weisz sniffing a triple-double with eight rebounds and seven assists without a turnover. Matt Morgan and Robert Hatter, the two leading scorers in the Ivy League, combined for 38 of Cornell's 60 points, with Morgan getting 20 and Hatter 18.
Princeton recognized its lone senior player, Mike Washington Jr., and student manager Rei Matsuura before the game.
The Tigers will head out on the road for their final full weekend of Ivy League play, visiting Harvard Friday and Dartmouth Saturday.
