Harvard's Lavietes Pavilion has been a tough place to play for the Princeton men's basketball team of late, and that didn't change even with Harvard out of the Ivy League title race.
The Crimson led by eight at halftime and held off a Princeton comeback to win 73-71, dropping Princeton to 10-2 in the Ivy. Princeton's hopes for the Ivy League title have just one path after the loss and Yale's win over Cornell: Defeat Dartmouth and Penn Saturday and Tuesday and hope for some help from Columbia against Yale Saturday night in New York.
A tight first half saw Harvard answer every Princeton run, ultimately taking a 43-35 lead into the break. The Crimson got the first basket of the second half to take a 10-point lead, but Princeton answered with an 11-0 run to take the first of what became only two leads at 46-45 with 14:47 to go on a Henry Caruso bucket.
From there, Princeton spent most of the rest of the night answering Harvard's mini-runs, the last when Harvard was up 67-62 with less than three minutes to go. Princeton scored four straight points to make it a 67-66 game with two and a half minutes left, and from there it was a possession-by-possession battle.
A Steven Cook 3-pointer gave Princeton its final lead at 69-68 with 1:35 to go before Harvard's Zena Edosomwan completed an old-fashipned 3-point play to make it 71-69 with 41 seconds to go. The Tigers got a quick drive to the rim from Devin Cannady to tie it again, but a foul sent the Crimson's Patrick Steeves, who finished with a game-high 25 points off the bench, to the line for a pair.
A 63-percent free throw shooter on the season, Steeves hit both, giving Princeton the chance to tie with a two or take the lead with a three. Princeton opted to drive to the rim, first with Myles Stephens going to the bucket and then with Steven Cook on a rebound, but neither basket fell and the Crimson held on for the win.
