Men's Basketball Names Award Winners at Annual Banquet
April 07, 2016 | Men's Basketball
The Princeton men's basketball program named its award winners at its annual postseason event, held Thursday in Jadwin Gym.
The program celebrated a 22-7 season that saw the Tigers earn their first NIT berth since 2002, gain their most wins since 2011 and take the Ivy League race into the league's final Saturday night.
The B.F. Bunn Trophy, given in honor of B. Franklin Bunn 1907 to the team member who in play, sportsmanship and influence has contributed most to the sport, went to junior Henry Caruso. A first-team All-Ivy League honoree, Caruso led the Tigers in scoring at 15 points per game and in rebounding at 6.2 boards per contest. While Caruso hit field goals at a .522 clip overall, best among any Tiger with 100 or more attempts, and 3-pointers at a .446 rate, he made the most trips to the free throw line of any Princeton player this season, hitting 94 in 131 tries.
It was the second straight year the honor went to a junior after seniors swept the award four years running after Dan Mavraides '11 shared the honor with Marcus Schroeder '10 in 2010. Hans Brase won it last season.
The Paul Richard Friedman '81 Award, given in Friedman's honor to the player who does his best every day in every way, is shared this season between senior Mike Washington Jr. and senior manager Rei Matsuura.
Washington, a tri-captain along with juniors Steven Cook and Spencer Weisz, was the only senior on the squad this year after classmate Hans Brase went down to injury just before the season began. In addition to his leadership in practice, Washington played in 17 games while getting a senior-night start against Cornell.
Matsuura, a four-year student manager, becomes the fourth student manager to earn the honor since the award was first given in 1992, joining Miles Clark '96, Michael McDonnell '99 and Matt Blackburn '14. Matsuura balanced her duties as manager with her studies in chemistry, and she was recognized on the team's senior night in February for her hard work, attention to detail, and great attitude in preparing for games and facilitating practices.
The Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award went to a freshman for just the second time in its 11 years. Devin Cannady joins Patrick Saunders '12 as the only rookie winners of the award, and the honor comes after a season that saw Cannady finish third on the team in scoring at 11.6 points per gmae while coming off the bench in all 29 contest. Cannady, who shot .485 from the field and a team-best .456 from beyond the arc, led the Ivy League with an .889 free-throw percentage.
