Men's Hoops to Visit BYU as Part of ESPN's Tip-Off Marathon
September 15, 2016 | Men's Basketball
For the first time since the event began in 2008, the Princeton men's basketball team will be a part of the ESPN Tip-Off Marathon, facing BYU on the night of Monday, Nov. 14 as the first men's game of the event.
The event will begin that night at 6 ET with back-to-back women's games, UConn at Florida State and Texas at Stanford, before the Tigers and Cougars get going at 10 p.m. ET/8 p.m. local time in Provo.
The first 11 games of the event, including Princeton-BYU, will air on ESPN2 as the locale shifts westward to Gonzaga, Pacific and Hawaii before returning to the East Coast for games Tuesday morning. The marathon will conclude with its 12th and 13th games, the State Farm Champions Classic featuring Kentucky, Michigan Sate, Duke and Kansas from Madison Square Garden at 7 and 9:30 p.m. ET Tuesday, Nov. 15.
Princeton and BYU have met four times, but not since 1991. That was also the last time Princeton played in the state of Utah. The teams nearly met a year ago in the NIT, but Virginia Tech held off Princeton in overtime in Blacksburg to earn a trip to Provo, where BYU beat the Hokies and Creighton to advance to the NIT semifinals at MSG.
While Princeton returns 99 percent of its points and minutes from a year ago and returns Hans Brase, its leading rebounder and second-leading scorer from 2014-15 who lost last season due to injury, BYU returns three of its five starters from last season after graduating leading scorer and guard Chase Fischer (18.2 ppg). Junior guard Nick Emery is the Cougars' leading returning scorer at 16.3 ppg.
