No. 6 Maryland Gets By No. 13 Field Hockey, 2-1
September 20, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 6 Maryland Terrapins used two goals from Grace Balsdon to defeat the No. 13 Princeton field hockey team on Tuesday evening at Bedford Field.
Â
Maryland was awarded a penalty corner in the fourth minute. On that possession, Welma Luus inserted to Emma Rissinger, who dropped a pass to Balsdon. Balsdon followed with a hard shot past Princeton goalie Grace Baylis to make the score 1-0.
Â
Balson blasted another shot off a corner in the 12th minute, but Baylis came up with the blocker save. The Tigers' best scoring chance in first stanza was in the 30th minute as sophomore Casey Swezey had a great look in the circle, but her attempt was wide. Junior Ryan McCarthy had two shots denied by Maryland's Sarah Holliday in the first half.
Â
Immediately into the second half, senior captain Cat Caro got the home squad on the scoreboard…
Â
The Tigers looked to take a lead in the 40th minute during a corner from senior Hailey Reeves. The senior dished to sophomore Elise Wong, who kept the ball in place for a shot from freshman Maddie Bacskai that was blocked. The freshman also sent a shot off target, looking for a deflection several minutes later.
Â
This time it was the Terrapins looking to jump in front as they got back-to-back corners in the 52nd minute. On the first corner attempt, Luus had consecutive shots blocked by the Princeton defense. On the second corner, much like the first, Rissinger dribbled the ball to Balsdon, who deposited it in the net, setting the score at 2-1.
Â
Princeton had a great opportunity to tie the game as the clock ticked under four minutes to go as junior Rachel Park found some open space in the circle, but her shot was off the mark.
Â
Head coach Carla Tagliente's team fell to 3-3 on the season. In a stretch of four straight games vs. nationally ranked opponents, the Tigers went 2-2. No. 6 Maryland improved to 6-2 overall. The defending Ivy League champions get conference play underway at home on Saturday vs. Dartmouth beginning at 12 p.m.
