No. 13 Field Hockey Starts Ivy League Play vs. Dartmouth; Travels to American Sunday

What's Going On?
- Princeton is 3-3 after losing to No. 6 Maryland, 2-1, on Tuesday at Bedford Field. Senior Cat Caro tied the game in the second half, but Maryland scored on a corner in the 53rd minute to pick up the victory.
- The Tigers have two wins this season over top-20 teams. Princeton dropped then No. 12 Albany, 3-2, on Sept. 9 and then No. 10 Delaware, 4-2, on Sept. 11.
- In the most recent NCAA RPI rankings to come out, Princeton ranks ninth in the country.
- Princeton has had two Ivy League Player of the Week winners in Ryan McCarthy (Sept. 5) and Sophia Tornetta (Sept. 12). Tornetta was also selected as the Suburban Transit GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete and Longstreth/NFCHA's Division I Offensive Player of the Week for her performance.
- Princeton recently wrapped up a stretch of four consecutive contests against nationally ranked opponents. The Tigers went 2-2.
- Some other games to look forward to on the schedule are a trip to No. 4 Penn State on Oct. 2 and a home date with No. 2 Duke on Oct. 9.
- McCarthy is tied for the Ivy League lead in assists (four) and tied for third in points (10).
- Tornetta is tied among conference foes in goals with four and is also tied for fifth in points (nine).
- Caro's three goals places her inside the Ivy League's top ten (eighth).
- The Tigers went 11-7 last season and won its 11th Ivy League title in 12 seasons.
- Princeton defeated Maryland, 3-1, to advance to the program's 14th NCAA quarterfinals appearance before losing to the eventual national champion, Syracuse.
- Princeton had seven players make the All-Ivy League squads including Maddie Copeland '16 (Ivy Offensive Player of the Year), Tornetta (Rookie of the Year) and Holmes-Winn (Coach of the Year) picking up major awards.
- The team had five players named to the 2015 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region squads.
- Copeland was selected to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-America third team.
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- Princeton is 27-7-2 all-time vs. Dartmouth.
- The Tigers have won all but two matchups vs. the Big Green since 1989.
- Dartmouth has not beaten Princeton since 2011.
- In Princeton's four-game winning streak, its outscored Dartmouth 22-5.
- The field hockey team has won the last five home contests vs. Dartmouth.
- Princeton opened its 2015 Ivy League schedule with a decisive 7-3 victory over Dartmouth College.
- Princeton's seven goals were the most since the Tigers earned a 7-1 decision over Dartmouth on Sept. 21, 2013.
- Copeland matched a career-high by netting her second hat-trick in a week. Tornetta had a pair of goals, while McCarthy dished out two assists. Teresa Benvenuti '16 collected a career-best four helpers. Caro and Elizabeth George accounted for Princeton's other two scores.
- The Big Green are 3-3 on the season with victories over Bryant, Vermont and Sacred Heart.
- Dartmouth has played one nationally ranked opponent, dropping a 3-1 decision vs. then No. 9 Albany on Sept. 3
- Freshman Carmen Braceras leads the Big Green in goals (four) and points (nine).
- Princeton is 12-4 in program history vs. American.
- The Tigers have won the last three contests dating back to 2012, outscoring American in that span, 9-1.
- Princeton has won two of the last three times in Washington, D.C.
- Copeland turned in her first career hat-trick to lead the Princeton to a decisive 5-1 win over American University at Bedford Field.
- Princeton finished with an 11-5 shot advantage and a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Princeton netminder Anya Gersoff needed to make just one stop in the win.
- The Eagles are 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the Patriot League. American began its Patriot League schedule with an 8-1 victory over Holy Cross last Saturday.
- American has one victory over a top-20 team, getting by then No. 19 James Madison, 2-1, on Sept. 4.
- The Tigers and Eagles have one common opponent so far, No. 6 Maryland. American lost to the Terrapins, 6-2, on Sept. 11.
- Natalie Konerth leads the Eagles with seven goals this season. She was an NFHCA second team All-Region and unanimous first team All-Patriot League player last season with a team-best 32 points.
