Long Trip Starts With a Win as Tigers Roll Past Cal Poly
December 16, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Princeton scored the first seven points of the game and was in control throughout as the Tiger men's basketball team opened its five-game, 12-day trip with an 80-60 win at Cal Poly Saturday night in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
Cal Poly was within five at 16-11 with 11-plus minutes to go before the half, and Princeton went on a 14-3 run to open a double-figure lead that grew as large as 17 at the half and 29 after the break.
Princeton nailed a season-high 16 3-pointers in the win with seven Tigers contributing to the total. Senior Myles Stephens, with 16 points, junior Devin Cannady, with 13, rookie Sebastian Much, with 12, and senior Aaron Young, with a season-high 11, were all in double figures. Much's four 3-pointers led the team and were a career high, as were his 12 points.
"We rode a lot of the momentum off of that Monmouth win (Tuesday in Jadwin). Defensively, we were locked in as a team," Stephens said. "Offensively, for me, I was able to knock down some shots like I was in the last game, keep that momentum going, and my teammates, like I always say, they put me in positions to score. For them, we were knocking down shots as a team. Our cuts are faster. We seem to have locked in a little bit more than we were previously in the season, which is good going forward into these next couple games."
Princeton will continue the trip with a visit Tuesday to USC in the second-ever meeting between the teams and first since a 1972 loss at the Quaker City Tournament at The Palestra. The 8 p.m. PT/11 p.m. ET game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. The Tigers will then head to Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic beginning Dec. 22.
