Princeton's Unbeaten Streak Comes to a Close in 3-1 Loss to Yale
February 03, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
Coming off of a big 3-0 shutout victory over No. 10 Quinnipiac on Tuesday night, No. 9 Princeton had an excellent opportunity to maintain its lead on the two-point lead on the Bobcats in the fight for the ECAC Hockey league's final home playoff spot. Unfortunately for the Tigers, senior Phoebe Staenz and the Bulldogs had other ideas.
Playing a tight-checking game all night, Yale kept Princeton's high-scoring top line off the board and took advantage of its only power play, scoring the game-winning goal with 51 seconds left.
Yale added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds for a 3-1 victory tonight at Hobey Baker Rink.
Yale scored the only goal of the opening period when Emma Vlasic tallied her third goal of the season after a Tigers' turnover 8:28 into the game. Fellow sophomores Jordan Chancellor and Julia Yetman assisted on the play.
Princeton had the better of play in the second period, scoring the equalizing goal at 9:14. Yale freshman goalie Tera Hofmann who finished with 30 saves, stopped junior Kiersten Falck's tuck-in attempt off a Morgan Sly pass in front of the Yale crease but senior Cassidy Tucker deposited the rebound in the net for her ninth goal of the year. Falck and Sly were credited with assists.
With the scored tied 1-1 heading into the third, both teams limited the opposition scoring attempts, with most of the shots coming from the perimeter and several other shots being blocked. One lone exception came with just over eight minutes lef: Yale's Kaitlin Gately was left all alone in front of the Tigers' cage but freshman goalie Steph Neatby stood her ground for the toughest of her 28 saves.
The game appeared headed to overtime until a collision in front of the Princeton bench led to the Tigers' only penalty of the game, a checking call with 1:45 to play.
The Princeton penalty kill appeared in control of things in the early going before Staenz, who led all players with eight shots on goal, managed to get free at the bottom of the left circle. The senior from Zurich, Switzerland was able to laser a shot just inside the right post for her 14th goal of the season.
Princeton pulled the goalie on the ensuing face off but Yale's defenders blocked two shot attempts. In the closing seconds, Courtney Pensavalle blocked a Tigers' pass, deflecting the puck to center ice where Emily Monaghan corralled it and skated down the ice before hitting the vacated cage for her second goal of the year.
The loss was the first for the Tigers (14-7-3, 10-5-2) since a 4-3 overtime loss at Boston University on Nov. 26; ending an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2). It marks the second longest unbeaten streak in program history, following a 12-game unbeaten streak just last season.
Princeton had not allowed more than one goal to an opponent since Jan. 1 (a 3-2 win over Quinnipiac at home), going 4-0-1 during that stretch.
Princeton and Quinnipiac are tied for fourth in the ECAC Hockey and the final home playoff spot with 22 points. The Tigers' hold the tiebreaker edge having defeated the Bobcats twice. With both Princeton and Quinnipiac traveling north to play St. Lawrence and Clarkson, the league's top two teams, next weekend, sixth-place Colgate (21 points), a 3-0 winner over RPI tonight, is also in the running for that spot.
The Tigers look to gain ground tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Brown at 3 p.m.
Yale (10-11-3, 8-8-1) is making a late season push after losing three of its first four games in January. The Bulldogs win tonight was the team's fifth straight. Yale (17 points) is four points behind the Raiders in seventh place.
Princeton hosts 10th-place Brown, which lost 9-0 at Quinnipiac tonight, tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm at Baker Rink.
