Balanced Scoring Effort Paces Princeton to 6-1 Win Over Brown
February 04, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
Six different players scored for Princeton and junior goalie Alysia DaSilva stopped 32 of 33 shots as the Tigers skated past Brown, 6-1, today at Hobey Baker Rink.
"These types of games if we play the right way it's fun to have everyone contribute," said senior forward Fiona McKenna, who had two assists and played a strong game for the Tigers. "The line I'm on we're not scorers. We're supposed to go out and have speed and what not. Everyone has their role but when you get scores like this everyone gets to have a little fun out there."
The Tigers took a first period lead when two familiar faces scored.
Sophomore Karlie Lund opened the scoring with her team-leading 20th goal of the year, and just before the period ended Carly Bullock scored in front for her 15th goal of the year with 20 seconds left to make it 2-0.
Coming off a 9-0 loss at Quinnipiac on Friday night, Brown came out strong in the opening period but DaSilva, who had not started for the Tigers since a 5-5 tie with Penn State on Dec. 31, stopped all 17 shots she faced.
Freshman Steph Neatby has handled the bulk of the goaltending recently, winning eight of her first 11 starts (8-2-1) after returning from an early season injury. But when called upon today, the junior from Oakville, Ontario was ready.
"She's been such a good teammate with a freshman playing," McKenna said. "She knows she's waiting for her chance. She was composed and saved us in that first period."
Senior Cassidy Tucker, who scored Princeton's only goal in a 3-1 loss to Yale on Friday, scored her 10th goal of the year 2:40 into the second to make it 3-0. The loss to the Bulldogs ended an 11-game unbeaten streak and McKenna said it was important to bounce back.
"It was huge," said the Burr Ridge, Ill., native. "I think last night was definitely a letdown. As a team we gave that game away in every zone. Today we had to win just to keep us going on the right path for the last four games now."
The Tigers dominated the middle period. Princeton fired 21 shots at Brown starting goalie Monica Elvin. The Bears did not record their first shot on goal in the period until there were six minutes left in the period and then totaled just six shots.
Freshman MacKenzie Ebel, playing in her seventh game, tucked in a rebound of a Lund shot for her first career goal, and first point, 39 seconds later to make it 4-0.
"We were so excited," said McKenna. "She's worked so hard every single practice, every single game. To have Ebel to get that goal was huge. We were pumped."
Senior Kelsey Koelzer, who played both defense and forward today, scored her seventh goal of the year 8:45 into the third while playing on a line with senior Audrey Potts and McKenna. Potts and McKenna were credited with assists.
Brown's Sarah Migliori ended DaSilva's shutout bid with 7:04 left to play, scoring on the Bear's seventh power-play opportunity before Princeton's Keiko DeClerck closed out the scoring with her second goal of the season.
"Keiko is so fast," said McKenna, who assisted on the play along with defender Sylvie Wallin, who also had two assists. "Potts and Ebel and I, we just try and keep up with her."
With the win Princeton (15-7-3, 11-5-2 ECAC Hockey) remains tied with Quinnipiac for fourth place with 24 points, and the final home ice slot in the upcoming ECAC Tournament with four games left. The Tigers hold a tie-breaker edge having won both games against Quinnipiac.
Both the Tigers and the Bobcats will be in upstate New York, facing first-place Clarkson (32 points) and second-place St. Lawrence (31 points) before concluding the season the following weekend with home games against last-place Union and eighth-place Rensselaer.
"I think with seven seniors we've all had our ups and downs over the years. We've all had good seasons, bad seasons. But you always want to go out on top," McKenna said. "We've put in a lot work-wise and I think for the seniors I think we're all trying to hold onto every good moment because they're dwindling now."
