The fifth-ranked Princeton heavyweights will test their own resilience for the first time this season, and they will do so against one of the nation's fastest boats, as well as another looking to break into the national Top 10.
One week after losing its first race of 2017, the Princeton varsity eight will take on #3 Yale and #14 Cornell in the 96th edition of the Carnegie Cup regatta. This will be the lone home event on Lake Carnegie Saturday, but it certainly carries more than enough intrigue.
Yale is the two-time reigning Eastern Sprints/Ivy League champion, and it was the only boat to defeat Princeton during the 2015 and 2016 regular seasons. Last year, the Bulldogs won the V8 race by only 2.1 seconds, while Princeton won the other four races in the regatta.
It won't only be the V8 boat looking to find its winning ways again. Harvard won all five races on Lake Carnegie, including an absolute thriller in the 2V race, which the Crimson won by .3 of a second.
Each race will have an impact on the Sprints seeding poll, which was released for the first time this week. Yale is either No. 1 or No. 2 in each of the top three boats, with Princeton behind the Bulldogs in each of the three. A productive Saturday morning would impact those polls quite a bit, though Princeton still has the Content Cup races with Brown remaining.
Yale is also looking to win the Carnegie Cup for the fourth straight time, which would match its longest winning streak (1923-26) since the series started in 1911. Princeton holds the overall lead with 37 wins, while Cornell has 34 and Yale has 24.
The Big Red is coming off a home loss to Navy last weekend in the Goes Trophy regatta. Saturday's races will begin at 9:15 am (10 am for the Carnegie Cup), and the full regatta will be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network. The race schedule can be found on Page 4.
