Men's Basketball Team Reflects on Ivy Title Season at Annual Banquet
April 20, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Thursday night at the Nassau Inn for their annual banquet, the Princeton men's basketball team looked back on a 2016-17 season that included a 14-0 run through the Ivy schedule, the first Ivy League Tournament title and the 25th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
Freshman Will Gladson won the Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award, just the second time in the award's 12-year history that it has gone to a rookie. Joining Patrick Saunders '12 as freshman honorees, Gladson earns the honor after playing in each of the team's last 28 games and 29 in all, seeing double-figure minutes 15 times. Gladson was one of only seven players on the team, and the only freshman, to play in as many as 29 games on the season.
Senior Spencer Weisz and junior Amir Bell shared the B.F. Bunn 1907 Trophy, the first time since 2011, when Dan Mavraides '11 and Kareem Maddox '11 won it, that the team's MVP award was shared. The Ivy League Player of the Year and an AP honorable mention All-America, Weisz finished his career as the only player in program history with 1,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 300 career assists and 200 career 3-pointers. His 5.4 rebounds per game led the team, as did his 125 assists, which marked just the sixth time since assists began being counted in the mid-1970s that a Princeton player had that many helpers in a season.
Bell surged during Ivy League play, shooting .581 from the field, the best of any Tiger player with more than three attempts in Ivy games, and Bell provided one of the highlight moments of the league season when his one-on-one left-handed drive to the basket put Princeton up two on Harvard with 1.1 seconds to play in an eventual 73-69 win. His .559 3-point field goal percentage in Ivy play was the best for anyone on the team with more than one attempt.
Senior Steven Cook won the Paul Richard Friedman '81 Award, given in honor of the late Friedman to the player who does his best every day in every way. Cook earned first-team All-Ivy League recognition, was the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-America since 1998 and first CoSIDA Academic All-District since 2007, and earned a place on the Allstate NABC Good Works Team thanks to his on-court accolades, academic achievement and community service efforts, gaining a trip to the Final Four as part of the honor. Cook led the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game, was second on the team at 5.1 rebounds per game, and shot .486 from the field and .426 from 3-point range.
