Men's Hoops Team Earns NABC Academic Excellence Award
July 12, 2017 | Men's Basketball
The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recognized the academic performance of Princeton's men's basketball program Wednesday as one of 50 Division I teams receiving an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award.
To qualify, teams needed a collective GPA of at least 3.0 for the 2016-17 school year. The Tigers were successful on the court as well, winning the Ivy League regular-season title and the inaugural Ivy League Tournament championship to gain a berth in the NCAA Tournament, where Princeton took ACC Tournament runner-up Notre Dame to the last possession. The team earned three first-team All-Ivy League honors for the first time since 1968 and went 14-0 in Ivy play for the first time since 1998 while becoming the first team anywhere in the league to finish unbeaten in conference play since 2008.
One of those first-teamers, Steven Cook '17, highlighted the team's academic awards with a place on the Allstate NABC Good Works Team, which takes into account a player's academic achievement and community service efforts as well as his on-court accolades. Cook also became Princeton's first CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree since 2007 and first CoSIDA Academic All-America winner since 1998.
