September 19, 2017 | Field Hockey
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Behind a season-best seven saves from Grace Baylis and tallies from Ryan McCarthy and Clara Roth, the No. 17 Princeton Tigers took down the No. 10 Maryland Terrapins, 2-1, at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Tuesday evening.
Â
The Tigers made the most of the first scoring threat as McCarthy ripped a hard shot just inside the circle into the back of the cage. She leads the team with three goals this season and 17 in the last two years.
Â
In the 11th minute, Maryland's Hannah Bond came along the right baseline and fired a shot on Baylis, but the Princeton goalie denied it. The battle in front of the cage led to a corner for the home team, but the shot was wide.
Â
A few minutes later, the Tigers had a chance for its second goal as Carlotta von Gierke lifted the ball that was misplayed by a Maryland defender. McCarthy took advantage, dribbling into the cage, but her attempt was just wide.
Â
The Tigers had two shots during its first corner attempt in the 15th minute, but one was saved and other deflected wide.
Â
Baylis stole the show in the first half as her great stop with the blocker in the 17th minute came on a big blast following a Terrapins corner. She made another denial several minutes later.
Â
Princeton found some breathing room as Clara Roth pounded in a rebound off a corner shot with under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, making in the score, 2-0.
Â
The Tigers kept the offensive firepower going as McCarthy broke away from the pack, got around a defender in the circle, but missed on her pass attempt to Sophia Tornetta.
Â
Maryland was kept off the scoreboard as the clock ticked under two minutes with Baylis posting her fourth save of the half.
Â
The second half began with Maryland starting to turn up the intensity. The Terrapins were awarded penalty stroke, which was converted by Keus Bodil in the 46th minute. Pressure continued as Sabrina Rhodes whipped a shot that was wide of the cage with 20 minutes remaining.
Â
Princeton was close to adding its third goal of the contest as Margaret Lynch sent an attempt at the cage that Tornetta deflected, but the ball was stopped from going over the endline by Bond. McCarthy dove after it, however the ball was off the mark as the time ran near 16 minutes.
Â
A few moments after, Maryland's Brooke DeBerdine found Melissa Wilken in front of Baylis, but Wilken's backhand goal was taken off the board by the referee. The Terrapins sent several more shots towards the sophomore goalie, but couldn't find the equalizer.
Â
Baylis made perhaps her most impressive save of the season as she sprawled out and used her blocker again as Maryland was awarded corner with 4:24 to go in the meeting.
Â
Maryland pulled its goalie with 4:05 left in the game, but couldn't register a shot as the Tigers earned its sixth victory over nationally ranked opponent in the last two seasons. McCarthy led the team with five shots, three landing on the cage.
Â
