Emeritus AD Gary Walters Added to NIT Committee
September 20, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Gary Walters '67, a Princeton men's basketball alumnus and for 20 years the Athletics Director at Princeton, has been named to the selection committee for the National Invitation Tournament, the NCAA announced today.
Walters, who became Athletic Director Emeritus at Princeton in 2014, previously served on the selection committee for the NCAA Tournament and was that committee's chair for the 2007 event.
"On behalf of the NIT, the Ivy League and Princeton, I am honored to have been asked to serve as a member of the NIT Men's Basketball Selection Committee," Walters said. "I have great respect for those committee members who are already serving, and I am committed to contributing to the legacy of excellence established by former Chair, Jack Powers. I hope that I prove worthy of the appointment and can contribute discerningly to the integrity of the selection process."
The committee selects the at-large teams and arranges the bracket for the 32-team NIT, which has been an NCAA property since the 2005-06 season.
Princeton played in the NIT three times during Walters' tenure as AD, in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Walters will enter the NIT committee alongside Dave Odom, who spent 22 seasons as a Division I head coach, last at South Carolina. Walters and Odom will join Butler AD Barry Collier, Missouri Valley Conference commissioner Doug Elgin, National Association of Basketball Coaches deputy executive director Reggie Minton, former head coaches Mike Montgomery and Bob Weltlich, and Boston College senior associate AD Vaughn Williams on the committee.
