ANNAPOLIS, Md. (1/6/18) - The Princeton men's track & field team opened the 2018 indoor season with 11 first-place finishes and two facility records in a dual meet against Navy at Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis, Md. The Tigers won 11 of 18 events, but the Midshipmen ultimately came out on top with a close final score of 94-87. This meet brings Navy just one meet closer to tying the now 23-24 series between the two schools.Â
Â
In the shorter events, senior Josh Freeman, who won the 200 in this meet last year, crossed the finished line in first in the 400 at 48.76. Junior Cole Bransford clocked in at 1:05.98 for a second finish in the 500.Â
Â
Freshman Sam Ellis ran in his first collegiate 800m race and won it with an impressive 1:52.80 finish. Senior Noah Kauppila won the 1,000m race with a 2:25.74 finish, almost a full four seconds faster than his 2:29.66 victorious finish in this meet last year. Freshman Kevin Berry won the 5k for the Tigers with a time of 15:23.85, although this was not a scored event.Â
Â
The Tigers strength really shined in the relay events, with triumphs in both the 4x4 and the 4x8. The 4x4 squad won with a 3:20.12 finish and the 4x8 team crossed the finish line in first at 7:49.13.Â
Â
The Tigers also performed well in the meet's field events, winning four out of six of them and setting two new facility records. The team dominated the high jump event, with freshman Jeffrey Hollis, junior Andrew Diehl and freshman Jeffrey Lee-Heidenreich all clutching 1-2-3 spots.
Â
Senior August Kiles, who won the pole vault last year at this meet, cleared 5.25m to win it again this year and set a new Navy at Wesley A. Brown Field House facility record. Fellow senior Mitchel Charles won the shot put with 16.37m throw. He also threw 17.97m in the shot put and placed 2nd behind his teammate, junior Adam Kelly.
