Chittenden Leads Tigers To Third Place at Ivy Heps
October 27, 2018 | Women's Cross Country
RESULTS
Sophomore Melia Chittenden took eighth place to pace the No. 30 ranked Princeton women's cross country team to a third place finish at the 2018 Ivy League Heptagonal Championships on Saturday afternoon.
Chittenden clocked a 21:06.3 over the 6k course with a 1.5k split time of 5:09.9 and a 4.7k split time of 16:34.9. Seniors Madison Offstein and Allie Klimkiewicz came in back-to-back at 21:09.2 and 21:09.8. Offstein had a 1.5k split of 5:11.3, while Klimkiewcz had a 5:13.2. At the 4.7k mark it was Offstein at 16:34.6 and Klimkiewz 17:39.7 before she started to close the gap.
Chittenden and Offstein both captured second-team All-Ivy League honors based on finish.
"We fell just short of our goal to finish in the top two in the team standings today," head coach Brad Hunt said. "Despite multiple Princeton athletes falling on the course due to the wild weather conditions, we made up two team spots and 14 points in the last 1200 meters to nearly reach our goal. Melia Chittenden and Maddie Offstein made huge individual improvements from last year and Allie Klimkiewicz and Sophie Cantine continue to impress with their steady improvement from the beginning of the fall. Freshman Page Lester truly stepped up today and bailed us out of trouble after the early fall by one of her teammates."
Freshman Page Lester was the fourth Tiger across the line coming in 26th 21:28.7 and sophomore Sophie Cantine was right behind her in 27th with a time of 21:28.7.
Freshman Gillian Wagner and senior Alie Fordyce claimed the 6-7 spots on the time with 6k times of 21:34.7 and 21:37.9
No. 20 Columbia won the race with a score of 52, followed by Dartmouth in second with 86 points. After Princeton's 90 points was Yale with 94, Brown at 107, Harvard with 108, Cornell with 175 and Penn with 184.
"We have had a productive season thus far, and we look forward to another opportunity in two weeks at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on a familiar course, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships up for grabs. We are so thankful for the remarkable support from the Princeton faithful, who were out in full force despite the weather."
