#3 Princeton Sweeps Virginia In 2018-19 Opener
November 11, 2018 | Women's Squash
The third-ranked Princeton women's squash team won all nine matches of its season opener at Virginia by 3-0 scores, including wins by freshmen Bubble Lui, Elle Ruggiero and Andrea Toth in their collegiate debuts. The Tigers got at least one victory from all four classes in the road win.
"Today was an awesome start to the season," said senior co-captain Izzy Hirshberg, won won at the #8 spot. "Our freshmen have been waiting to debut the Tiger uniform and played with impressive confidence. We were able to show that our preseason training has paid off. With an overall 9-0 win and all matches in decisive three games, we can use this strong momentum as we look forward to playing Stanford next weekend."
Lui took over the #1 spot following the graduation of four-time All-American Olivia Fiechter, and she pulled out a trio of hard-fought games to defeat Emma Jinks. Ruggiero won her match at #4, while Toth won her match at the #9 spot.
"It was great to to see the team back in competitive play," head coach Gail Ramsay said. "I was impressed with the first years' play. They were focused and determined to play hard and win. Bubble at number one was particularly impressive. She was down 9-6 in the third game and seemed a bit out of sorts, but she was able to change up her tactics and started to attack the back corners more, and she ran off six of the next seven points to win the match."
Princeton will now turn its attention to a match next Saturday against Stanford in Chestnut Hill, Pa., followed by its home debut Sunday against George Washington.
