Llewellyn Earns First Ivy Rookie of the Week Honor
December 17, 2018 | Men's Basketball
Co-leading Princeton and sharing game-high honors with 22 points, along with dishing out eight assists, has helped Jaelin Llewellyn earn Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
Llewellyn has played two games since returning from injury and illness in the Tigers' visit to Madison Square Garden on Dec. 9, scoring 17 points in his debut for the biggest-scoring first game for any Tiger rookie since Devin Cannady scored 17 against Rider in 2015. This week, Llewellyn followed that up by going 10 of 15 from the field and 2 of 4 from 3 on the way to 22 points. While also adding three rebounds, a block and a steal, Llewellyn's eight helpers came with just two turnovers.
The eight assists were the most for any Tiger freshman in Mitch Henderson's seven-plus seasons leading the team and were just two off the most ever by a Tiger freshman, set by John Thompson III '88 when he had 10 against UNC Charlotte in 1984. Despite missing the season's first seven games, Llewellyn's scoring output still puts him on track to break the program's scoring record for a freshman, set by Chris Young '02 in 1999 with 387 points. Counting only regular-season games, Llewellyn is on track for 390 points.
Llewellyn is shooting .548 (17-31) from the field and .455 (5-11) from 3 so far this season, with the eight assists giving him 12 for the season with six turnovers.
It's Princeton's second Ivy weekly honor of the season, along with Cannady's Ivy Player of the Week award on Nov. 26, and it's the first Ivy Rookie weekly honor since current sophomore Jerome Desrosiers won on Jan. 15, 2018.
Llewellyn and the Tigers will head to No. 2 Duke Tuesday for a 6 p.m. tip televised by ESPN2.
