Princeton Makes Up Three-Game Set vs. Harvard Tuesday, Wednesday

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers (10-17, 7-5 Ivy) make up an Ivy League series against the Harvard Crimson (16-17, 6-6 Ivy) at Clarke Field this week beginning Apr. 24.
A doubleheader will take place on Tuesday (Apr. 24) beginning at 11:30 a.m. The series finale takes place Wednesday (Apr. 25) at 1 p.m.
Princeton is third in the conference behind Yale (11-4) and Columbia (9-6). The Tigers would hold the tie-breaker over Columbia, should they finish with the same record, after taking two out of three last weekend. Dartmouth (6-5-1), Harvard (6-6), Penn (6-8-1), Cornell (4-8) and Brown (4-11) are behind the Tigers.
What Did You Miss?
- Columbia took game one of the doubleheader on Saturday, 2-0. Princeton finished with 10 hits in the game, highlighted by Conor Nolan and Asher Lee-Tyson's three hits each.
- In game two, Ramzi Haddad had four hits while Ben Gross struck out seven in seven innings as Princeton earned a 10-5 decision.
- The Tigers were trailing in the game before a six-run fourth frame put them in front for good.
- Trailing 4-1, Princeton rallied with six runs between the seventh and eighth innings on Sunday to defeat Columbia, 7-6, and earn the series victory. It's first time the Tigers have earned a series win over the Lions since 2011.
- The Tigers hit .333 against Columbia over the weekend. Lee-Tyson was 5-of-7 (.714) while Nolan posted a .714/.571/.714 slash line with two stolen bases. Haddad had a .583 on-base percentage and a .636 slugging percentage.
- After an 0-16 stretch (Mar. 9-17) at the plate, Horsted has eight multi-hit games. He has raised his batting average 141 points and is now second on the team in hitting (.307). The outfielder leads the squad in walks (17) and total bases (39).
- Five different players are hitting at least .275 in Lee-Tyson, Horsted, Nolan, Taylor Beckett and Chris Davis. Nolan is second on the team in RBI (15) and has seven extra-base hits. Beckett has a team-high .448 slugging percentage while Davis has 22 runs, 11 walks and three stolen bases.
- The Princeton pitching staff is averaging 8.25 strikeouts per nine innings. Eight different pitchers have at least 10 strikeouts this season.
- Gross has allowed three earned runs or less in five of his last six starts and has struck out at least seven hitters in his last four outings.
- Ryan Smith has pitched at least five innings in his last five starts.
- Eli Kimbell has been one of the best relief pitchers in the Ivy League, sitting with a 1.52 ERA in 23 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting .186 against him while he has picked up two saves and two wins.
- Eric Rojas has a 3.27 ERA in eight appearances. Opponents are hitting just .122 against him.
- The Tigers had three alums make the Big League last season in Matt Bowman '14, Danny Barnes and Chris Young '02.
- Bowman finished his second year with the St. Louis Cardinals with another sub-4.00 ERA (3.99). He was tied for seventh in all of baseball with 75 appearances, adding three wins, two saves and 46 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings of work.
- Barnes completed his first full season with the Blue Jays, posting a 3.55 ERA in 60 outings of the bullpen. He had 62 strikeouts in 66 innings, earned three victories and finished 13 games for the Blue Jays.
- Seven other alums, Ross Ohlendorf '05 (Japan), David Hale '11 (AAA), Jack Murphy (AAA), Mike Ford '14 (AAA), Alec Keller '14 (AA), Cameron Mingo '16 (A) and Danny Hoy '16 (A), played professional baseball last season.
- This year, Barnes has not allowed an earned run in his last 11 appearances.
- David Hale was called up to the New York Yankees on Sunday.
- The Crimson is 16-17 overall and 6-6 in the Ivy League. Harvard has taken down Samson, New Mexico State, Presbyterian, Furman, Holy Cross, Columbia, Boston College, Penn, Northeastern, Yale and Brown.
- In a victory over Yale on Apr. 14, Noah Zavolas threw the program's first no-hitter since 2001.
- Patrick Robinson leads the Crimson in hitting (.311). He has three home runs and 16 RBI along with a .400 on-base percentage.
- Patrick McColl is second in the Ivy League in RBI (32).
- Harvard has three starters with an ERA under 3.50 in Zavolas (2.89), Hunter Bigge (2.96) and Simon Rosenblaum-Larson (3.21). All three are averaging at least 9.9 strikeouts per nine.
