April 24, 2018 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Harvard Crimson (18-17, 8-6 Ivy) earned a doubleheader sweep over the Princeton Tigers (10-19, 7-7 Ivy) at Clarke Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Crimson picked up a 5-1 decision in game one and 13-6 in game two.
Game 1: Harvard 5, Princeton 1
Chris Davis led the team with two hits while Conor Nolan stole a base. The Princeton pitching staff combined for eight strikeouts in the loss.
Harvard registered an unearned run in the first inning on an RBI groundout from Patrick Robinson. The Tigers got a runner to second as Nolan led off with a single and swiped second base to open the second frame, but was left stranded. A sacrifice fly gave the Crimson its second run in the third stanza.
Princeton's best scoring threat came in the bottom of the seventh inning. Joseph Flynn led off with a double and advanced to third on a hit from Ramzi Haddad. Max West lined a base hit up the middle that let Flynn touch home. After a flyout, a wild pitch allowed Haddad to get to third base, but he was thrown out to trying to score. A strikeout finished off the inning.
Ben Skinner added on to the Crimson lead with an RBI single in the eighth. The Crimson tacked on two more in the ninth frame and the Tigers couldn't rally.
Matt Rothenberg had a game-high three hits for Harvard. Buddy Hayward went six innings and struck out seven to earn the victory while Kieran Shaw threw the final three frames for his fourth save of the season.
Game 2: Harvard 13, Princeton 6
Jesper Horsted and Asher Lee-Tyson each had two hits to pace Princeton's offense. Nolan, Jack Anderson and Keith Gabrielson combined for seven strikeouts.
Flynn got the Tigers on the board in their first at-bat with an RBI knock to right centerfield. A fielding error by Princeton gave Harvard its first run in the next half stanza. In the third inning, another error by the Tigers allowed two more runs to score, giving the Crimson a 3-1 advantage.
The Crimson used a five-run fifth inning to put the game out of reach. A throwing error made the score, 4-1. Consecutive run-producing hits gave Harvard its fifth and sixth runs before a sacrifice fly. A Patrick McColl RBI single made the contest an 8-1 affair.
In the next Princeton at-bat, a fielder's choice and RBI groundout got the Tigers within five, 8-3. Harvard scored two more times in the seventh and three in the ninth to wrap the road squad's scoring.
A wild pitch in the eighth, followed by a Horsted RBI knock and a sacrifice fly from Flynn in the ninth completed all the scoring.
Harvard and Princeton finish the series tomorrow at Clarke Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
