No. 4 Tigers Breakout of Exam Period with 4-2 Win Over Penn State
January 29, 2019 | Women's Ice Hockey
No. 4 Princeton wasted little time to get its top ranked power-play unit rolling, after a three-week break for final exams. The Tigers scored a power-play goal less than three minutes into the game and finished 3 for 5 in a 4-2 win over Penn State.
Princeton took a 4-0 lead over former head coach Jeff Kampersal '92 and his Nittany Lions over the first 40 minutes. Penn State was able to get on the board with two late-game goals. This was the first time Kampersal has coached at Hobey Baker Rink, since he left his alma mater in 2016, after a 21-year career as head coach.
The Tigers extend their unbeaten streak to 19 straight, the longest unbeaten streak in the nation, as they improve to 14-2-5.
Princeton, who has the fourth best scoring offense in the nation, put up two goals in the first six minutes with back-to-back power play goals.
Sophomore Sarah Verbeek notched her fifth goal of the season after a tic-tac-toe play from Mariah Keopple and Annie MacDonald.
Freshman Maggie Connors collected her 15th goal of the season and has now scored a goal in each of the last six games. It was set up by freshman Sarah Fillier, who finished the game with three points, and is now the nation's leading scorer averaging 2.06 points per game.
Fillier net the game-winning goal less than two minutes into the second after winning her own neutral zone face off back to her defensemen. She made a great move to get the puck around her defender and rifled in her 13th goal of the season.
Junior Carly Bullock made it 4-0 at 7:30 of the second with Fillier and Connors assisting on the man-advantage goal.
Penn was able to get two goals in the final 3:34 to keep Rachel McQuigge from earning the shutout.
McQuigge made 29 saves and has not lost since Oct. 21 at No. 1 Wisconsin.
Princeton resumes ECAC Hockey play this weekend hosting St. Lawrence and No. 5 Clarkson at Hobey Baker Rink. Admission to both games is free.
