No. 12 Princeton Wins Eight in Defeating No. 25 Rider, 32-9
December 19, 2019 | Wrestling
In its final dual match of 2019, 12th-ranked Princeton defeated 25th-ranked Rider Thursday night in Dillon Gym, 32-9.
The win follows Princeton's two-point victory a year ago that was the program's first over Rider since the 1981-82 season, and that win ended an 18-match Broncs streak in the series. Now, the Tigers have their first back-to-back wins over the Broncs since the 1980-81 and '81-'82 seasons, and it came by Princeton's largest margin of victory ever over the Broncs, surpassing an 11-point win in the 1979-80 season.
Quincy Monday, ranked seventh in the nation by Intermat, avenged his Princeton Open loss to sixth-ranked Jesse Dellavecchia, opening the night with a 13-7 win. That started the Tigers on a three-match run on the way to a 12-0 lead, including Grant Cuomo's fifth fall in eight matches on the season at 165 and Kevin Parker's 9-8 win at 174 over Dean Sherry.
Rider got on the board with a fall by George Walton at 184 over 18th-ranked Travis Stefanik in a match that Stefanik led 5-3 before Walton got the pin. Princeton, though, picked right back up with a run of three wins in a row, with a pair of wins from third-ranked wrestlers in Patrick Brucki at 197 and Patrick Glory at 125. Brucki's win was the second of the night between top-20 competitors, and the Tiger junior beat 17th-ranked Ethan Laird 11-6. Glory's win was his first pin of the season, coming in 1:35 over Jonathan Tropea, and in between the two No. 3 wrestlers, freshman Aidan Conner got his first collegiate win when he beat Ryan Cloud 6-3.
After taking six of the first seven matches, Princeton had a 24-6 lead with three matches to go when Ty Agaisse, limited to one match in 2018-19 after an early-season injury, made his season debut at 133. In a match that went down to a review at the final buzzer, Agaisse had a possible takedown that would have given him a 4-3 win, but Cefolo held on for a 3-2 victory following a look at the video.
Those were the final points Rider had on night, with Marshall Keller picking up five points by shutting out Chris Wright at 141 for a technical fall and 14th-ranked Mike D'Angelo closing it out with an 8-1 decision at 149 over Gino Fluri.
Following the holiday break, Princeton will head to the Midlands Invitational outside Chicago, Dec. 29-30.
