Defending Champ Brucki Among Tiger Contenders as Midlands Opens Sunday

The 57th Midlands Championships opens Sunday at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., outside Chicago, and several Tigers are high seeds with Patrick Brucki at 197 as a returning event champ.

Should he advance to the round of 16, he'll face one either Missouri's Noah Surtin or SIU-Edwardsville's Tommy Dineen. Northern Iowa's Jacob Schwarm, seeded seventh and ranked 17th nationally, ad Northwestern's Chris Cannon, seeded 10th, are the seeded wrestlers among potential quarterfinal opponents.
Sean Pierson, who has wrestled at 133 for the Tigers this season, is in the 125 draw and will open in the round of 32 against either Northern Iowa's 12th-seeded Bryce West or Franklin & Marshall's Jose Diaz. Fifth-seeded and national No. 10 Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern is a possible round of 16 opponent, and Central Michigan's fourth-seeded and ninth-ranked Drew Hildebrandt and Campbell's 13th-seeded Korbin Meink are possible seeded quarterfinal opponents.

Northwestern's Sebastian Rivera, seeded third and ranked third nationally, is a potential round of 16 opponent, and Virginia's Louie Hayes, seeded sixth and and ranked 18th nationally, is a potential quarterfinal opponent.

Keller will open in the round of 32 against either third-seeded and seventh-ranked Josh Heil of Campbell or Northern Illinois' Nathan Swartz. D'Arcy is in the other half of the draw and will open against Ohio's fifth-seeded and 17th-ranked Shakur Laney in the round of 32.

Mike D'Angelo and Josh Breeding will represent Princeton at 149. D'Angelo, seeded seventh and ranked 14th nationally, will open in the round of 32 against either Cumberland's Tres Leon or Buffalo's Ty Raines. Virginia's Denton Spencer, seeded 10th and ranked 17th nationally, is the lone seeded opponent among D'Angelo's potential quarterfinal foes, and among wrestlers D'Angelo might meet in the quarters is Iowa's Pat Lugo, seeded second and ranked third in the nation. Those two met in the Dec. 8 dual at Princeton with Lugo taking a 3-2 overtime decision.
