Princeton Hosts Cornell and Columbia This Weekend

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton Tigers begin a stretch of five games in eight days as they welcome the Cornell Big Red and Columbia Lions to Jadwin Gym this weekend.

Both games will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Cornell contest will be featured on ESPN+ while the Columbia matchup is set for ESPN3. The game vs. Columbia is not part of the ESPN+ package and will need a cable subscription to view.

On Friday, the Tigers will honor Bella Alarie for scoring 1,000 career points before tip-off and on Saturday, the team will honor Sydney Jordan for winning the Pyne Honor Prize.

Long-Range Buckets – Harvard's success from deep continued against Princeton as it went 11-of-23 (47.8 percent) including six triples in the second half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Madeline Raster made the Ivy League battle a two-point affair (73-71) with 40 seconds remaining.  On the next possession, Qalea Ismail scooped up an offensive rebound, which forced Harvard to foul. The senior made a free-throw and on the following trip down the floor, the home team's trey was off the mark. Gabrielle Rush's free-throw with four seconds to go sealed the victory for Princeton.

Dartmouth's Defense – The Big Green's defense was stout in the first quarter as it held Princeton to two baskets and forced nine turnovers, jumping in front 20-6. With the first basket of the second frame, the Big Green held a 16-point lead, its largest of the game. However, the Tigers made over half their shots (25-47) after the first quarter and turn the ball just four times as they railed for a comeback victory.

Gabrielle Rush – The senior dropped in 15 points at Harvard and 14 points at Dartmouth last weekend. After never starting before this season, the guard has been tremendous, averaging a career-best 13.3 points while shooting 36.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Now … let's take a look at the Cornell/Columbia weekend …

Cornell Defending the Three – The Big Red have been one of the best teams in the country (19th) in defending the three-point line (27.3. percent). In Cornell's sweep against Brown and Yale last weekend, the Big Red held them to a 9-of-31 from deep (29.0 percent). The Tigers sank nine treys in a win at Cornell earlier this month.

Rebounding – Columbia ranks near the bottom in Division I (295th) in rebounding margin (-4.4) are only 221st in rebound per game (36.5). In the first matchup, the Tigers outrebounded the Lions, 46-31. Bella Alarie (five) had as many offensive rebounds as the entire Columbia squad. The 2018 Ivy League Player of the Year had 14 total in the game to go along with her conferece record 45 points and 20 made field goals.

#BellaBuckets – Speaking of Alarie, the junior has been not just one of the best players in the Ivy League, but one of the best players in the nation. She became one of just two players in Ivy history to score 40+ points in a game twice with a 41-point outing at Dartmouth. In 13 games this season, the Bethesda, Md., native has posted eight double-doubles, giving her 28 in 73 career contests. She's averaging 24.7 points on 52.0 percent shooting, 10.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.2 blocks per game. The last Tiger to average a double-double for an entire campaign was Ellen DeVoe '86 in 1984-85.
