May 17, 2019 | Heavyweight Rowing
WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 5 Princeton Tigers travel to Lake Quinsigamond for the annual Eastern Sprints this Sunday (May 19).
Yale has won the last four V8 races and the last two Rowe Cups, an award given to the team with the highest combined total points in the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman races. The Tigers last won the Rowe Cup in 2016 and the V8 contest in 2006.
Last year, Princeton's V8 squad placed fourth, but overall the Tigers took four medals including a gold from the 2V. Head coach Greg Hughes' squad placed second in the Rowe Cup. The recap from 2018 can be found here.
The two-time defending champion, Yale, has earned the top seed in each of the five boats, but Princeton is right in the mix. The Tigers sit at No. 3 in the V along with a No. 2 seed at 3V and 4V.
"The team has made some solid progress over these past two weeks of training since we closed out the regular season," said head coach Greg Hughes. "The boats are moving nicely and the team is excited to let it rip on Sunday."
"The team is in a fantastic place at the moment," said Chris Lawrie. "A strong energy and excitement have been growing in the boathouse and I think the any success we have experienced is a direct result of the efforts and consistency of the full team."
The Eastern Sprints features heats before the finals later in the day on Sunday. The 4V's heat is at 8:10 a.m., with the top three moving to the final at 1:48 p.m. 3V's heat starts at 8:50, with top two advancing to the A Final at 2:48. 1V's heat starts at 9:36 with the A Final at 5:30. 2V's heat gets underway at 10:36 with the A Final at 4:15 p.m. The 5V contest is at 1:12 p.m.
