Results l Day 1 Recap l Day 2 Recap
Junior Joey Daniels has made history becoming the first Tiger in Princeton history to reach the NCAA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles.
Daniels was second in heat 2 with a 13.75 with a tremendous finish and lean to take second away from LSU's Damion Thomas. He advanced to the quarterfinals after a 13.79 in the first round yesterday. Daniels 13.75 is his fastest time run in a Princeton singlet while the Canadian has a lifetime best of 13.70 from nationals last summer.
The Princeton record holder in the event, Daniels is a two-time Ivy champion and three-time NCAA Regional qualifier.
Daniels will be in the semifinals on Wednesday, June 5 at 7:32 p.m. (CT).
The Ivy League triple jump champion Freshman Dayo Abeeb just missed advancing. After the first two flights were complete he was in second place but after the next 24 athletes competed he was slowly knocked down the list. In the end Abeeb missed making the final 12 by a mere three inches. Abeeb fouled on his first attempt before leaping to 15.59 (51-1.75) on his second try. He didn't have an improvement on his third jump with a 15.48 (50-9.5).
Junior Conor Lundy was also in a wait and see situation after the first section of the 5k. Lundy finished sixth at 14:16.14 (31.12, 1:14.67, 1:16.24, 1:13.48, 1:05.11, 1:07.34, 1:09.21, 1:09.28, 1:10.48, 1:08.51, 1:07.01, 1:05.52, 58.22), after a pack of six broke away at the bell. At 3800 meters and three laps to go, Lundy was in 10th place as he started to move to the outside and pushed ahead into fifth place at 4200 meters. With one lap to go a pack of eight moved ahead looking for the top five qualifying spots. That eight quickly became six and Lundy wasn't able to catch the fifth runner and had to wait to see if would make the final two spots going on time but heat 2 went out and stayed out faster, pushing Lundy into 17th place overall.
Also in the 5k, senior Jeremy Spiezio had a 15:00.91 to finish 39th and junior Matt Grossman had a 15:08.54 to finish 41st.
The Ivy League shot put champion sophomore Kelton Chastulik had a mark of 16.76 (55) in the event, improving on every attempt to finish 39th overall. Started with a 16.57 (54-4.5) then had a 16.73 (54-10.75) on his second attempt before the 16.76 on his third throw.
In the high jump, sophomore Jeffrey Hollis cleared 2.11 (6-11) to finish 23rd overall while senior Andrew Diehl was 29th with a 2.06 (6-9). Hollis, the Ivy champion cleared the 2.01 (6-7), 2.06 (6-9) and 2.11 on his first attempts at each height but was unable to make it over 2.16 (7-1), which is just off his PR of 2.15. Diehl cleared the opening height of 2.01 and 2.06 on his first attempts at each. The Ivy League runner-up was unable to match his PR of 2.11 on his three attempts.
Joining Daniels in Austin will be Ed Trippas who won the steeplechase yesterday with a third fastest time in Ivy history, an 8:33.90.
