Rookies Connect in Princeton's Season-Opening Win
August 30, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Princeton was on the road Friday night against a Saint Joseph's team that already had two games in the books, but the Tigers left Philadelphia with a 1-0 win just the same.
Grace Sherman took a seventh-minute throw-in from fellow freshman Madison Curry and threaded it inside the left post for what turned out to be the only goal, dropping Saint Joseph's to 1-1-1 while the Tigers prepare for Sunday night's visit from Boston College to Roberts Stadium.
Â
Princeton ended up outshooting the Hawks 9-4 overall and 5-4 on goal, with each team drawing four corner kicks. The Tigers will host 3-0 Boston College Sunday at 7 p.m. at Roberts Stadium. Admission is free for the game, which will be BC's first away from home on the new season and will match the teams from the first NCAA women's tournament game at Roberts, back in 2015.
Postgame Notes
• Princeton remained perfect in openers under fifth-year head coach Sean Driscoll, who picked up his 52nd win at Princeton. That ties him for second in program history with the program's first coach, Bob Malekoff, and behind only predecessor Julie Shackford, who finished with 203 in 2014.
• The Tigers improved to 5-0 all-time against Saint Joseph's and 2-0 on the road against the Hawks, shutting the team out in all five matches.
• Senior keeper Natalie Grossi made all four saves to complete her 26th career shutout, extending her Princeton record and moving one closer to the Ivy League record of 29, which Dartmouth alum Kristin Luckenbill holds.
