No. 4 Maryland Picks Up 4-3 OT Decision Over No. 10 Princeton
September 24, 2019 | Field Hockey
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Hannah Bond's goal with one-tenth of a second left in overtime gave the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins a 4-3 victory over the No. 10 Princeton Tigers.
Â
On a corner right before the end of the extra session, Bond's first attempt was denied by Grace Baylis, but her second shot went high in the far side of the cage.
Â
Princeton dropped its second straight overtime contest and fell to 3-4 overall. It is the 11th straight one-goal game for the Tigers. It's also the third consecutive overtime contest between Maryland and Princeton.
Â
The Terrapins snagged the first chance of the contest as Kelly LePage found a pass, dribbled to the right of the circle and hit a bouncing ball that was wide.
Â
Sammy Popper intercepted a pass, dribbled through a defender, went to the right of the circle and whipped a shot that went in. It gave Maryland its first deficit since September 13th, a span of three games.
Â
Maryland found the tying tally in the second quarter. The home squad secured three consecutive corners and finally found the back of the cage on the third try as Linda Cobano deflected in a ball at the 4:30 mark. Maryland's Kesus Bodil snuck in on the back-line right before the half, but couldn't knock the ball in.
Â
The second half started with a flurry. 23 seconds in, Cobano whacked a shot that was blocked, but corralled the rebound and hit it in. Less than a minute later, MaryKate Neff sent a pass to Clara Roth, who brought it near the cage and pushed it through.
Â
Roth, five minutes later, put the Tigers in front as she brought the ball along the left baseline and collected her fourth goal of the year. The rest of quarter had a furious pace that featured 10 combined shots. Baylis snagged two saves off of Maryland corners to keep the road unit ahead.
Â
Down a person in the fourth stanza, Princeton didn't allow a shot during that two-minute stretch. The Terrapins got the equalizer with four minutes remaining as a loose ball on a rebound was tapped in. Maryland had a corner with under 60 seconds to go, but the insert was misplayed.
Â
Maryland finished with a 22-7 shot advantage and 13-2 lead in corners. Baylis denied seven shots and now at least six saves in three games this season. The Tigers begin Ivy League play on Saturday at Dartmouth (12 p.m.).
