McCarthy's Double OT Goal Gives No. 5 Princeton Victory Over No. 10 Wake Forest
September 08, 2019 | Field Hockey
Back-to-back thrillers
This time … Princeton collected the victory.
In a remarkable display of athleticism, Hannah Davey collected the rebound off her shot, turned around, passed the ball through her legs to Ali McCarthy, who deposited it into back of the cage to give Princeton a 2-1 victory over the No. 10 Wake Forest Demon Deacons in double overtime at Karen Shelton Stadium on Sunday morning.
The first quarter was tightly defensive battle as the teams combined for three total shots. Four minutes into the second frame, Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead as Kelsey Gill corralled the ball and snuck the high ball in.
Princeton's best scoring chance in the first half came with under a minute to go. Clara Roth dribbled around and cleared space in the circle, whacked a bouncing shot towards the cage, but Emma Street couldn't quite tap the ball in.
Sammy Popper earned two chances early in the third stanza but was denied. With under 10 minutes to go, the Tigers picked up a corner. Carlotta von Gierke inserted to Julianna Tornetta, who stopped the ball for Davey. The sophomore whipped it through everyone and tied the matchup at 1-all.
McCarthy almost found herself with a goal in the third frame as an errant Wake Forest pass found her stick, but her attempt was wide of the cage. The Tigers had another corner just before the end of the quarter, but Tornetta's ball was stopped by Wake Forest's goalie Isla Bint.
The Tigers continued to pepper Bint in the fourth stanza with their top threat coming off the sticks of Davey and Roth on consecutive attempts. Bint finished with three saves in the fourth and six overall.
Baylis picked up one of the signature saves in her career in the first overtime session. After a Demon Deacon corner, the ACC squad was awarded a penalty stroke with 2:54 left. Alex Grippo shot it to the right and Baylis moved that way and hit it away with her stick. It kept the sudden death overtime going and advanced the game into a second extra frame.
After a corner was sent away, Davey's athleticism took over and led the Tigers to the victory. Princeton improve to 1-1 overall and host two top-25 teams Albany and Penn State next weekend.
