No. 3 Princeton Battles No. 1 Harvard to Final Game
January 12, 2020 | Women's Squash
Sunday's battle of two of the top three teams in the nation came down to the final game of the last match on court, and only three points decided the outcome as No. 1 Harvard defeated No. 3 Princeton, 5-4.
Princeton won on courts five and seven through nine and pushed the match on court four between Emme Leonard and Eleonore Evans to the finish before Evans won 3-2 to secure the match for Harvard. Andrea Toth, Grace Doyle and Morgan Steelman all won their matches in 3-0 sweeps, while India Stephenson bounced back from a second-game loss to take the last two and win in four games.
At 1-1 in the Ivy League and 6-1 overall, the Tigers will be away from competition until after the break for first-semester finals, when the Ivy slate will resume with a trip to Penn.
Princeton coach Gail Ramsay on the match:
"Morgan played really well today to beat the Harvard eight Charlotte Orcutt in three straight games. Morgan was moving very well and covered the court efficiently. She also was accurate with her length and width which kept her in control of the T. This match was one of her best matches this season so far.
"Gracie Doyle played the number seven position and it was her first match back into the line this season. She has been recovering from a hamstring issue and was sidelined since last July. All considered, she played a great match against Eve Coxon, the Harvard number seven. Gracie was hitting with good pace and kept Evie moving into all four corners of the court and was mostly on the defensive. It was great to have Gracie in the line.
"Freshman India Stephenson won her match decisively against Grace Steelman. India was attacking from the middle of the court and kept Grace under a lot of pressure. It was back-to-back Ivy wins for her."
Sophomore Andrea Toth on the both:
"Going into today's match, we knew it was going to be a battle and we were all very excited to put our hard work to the test. Even though we didn't come out on top, I couldn't be more proud to be on this team. Each and every one of us fought hard until the very end and showcased all the time and effort we have been putting into our practices. I was nervous for my match, knowing how badly we all wanted this win today, but I really focused on going back to my basics. I really tried to play a simple game keeping my errors to a minimum and forcing my opponent to make the mistakes. I think today I did a good job of dominating the court and really working my opponent around the four corners."
Assistant coach Hesham Aly:
"So close! We knew we had a chance to beat them if we played well, and I think today we did. It all came down to a few points that could've gone either way. The top court had serious competition that proved too strong in the end. I was impressed with their attitudes and positivity on and off the court today."
