No. 10 Quinnipiac Gets Past No. 6 Princeton in OT, Forces Decisive Game Sunday
February 29, 2020 | Women's Ice Hockey
As elated as the sixth-ranked Princeton women's hockey team was upon Carly Bullock scoring her tying goal with three minutes left in the third period, 10th-ranked Quinnipiac brought the Tigers back to ice level with a deflected shot by Courtney Vorster less than two minutes into the overtime to force a decisive game in the ECAC quarterfinals best-of-three Sunday at 3 p.m. back at Baker Rink.
Tickets for Sunday's game are available here.
Princeton joined Harvard as host teams playing third games Sunday. Cornell swept eighth-seeded St. Lawrence Saturday and will host next weekend's ECAC semifinals and final, and third-seeded Clarkson closed out sixth-seeded Colgate to advance. Princeton would meet Clarkson in the semifinals with a win Sunday, sending the Harvard-Yale winner to face top-seeded Cornell. Quinnipiac would face Cornell in the semis if it wins, with the Harvard-Yale winner meeting Clarkson in that scenario.
Saturday's first period didn't have the scoring pop that Friday's did, when Princeton scored four times and never looked back in taking the series lead. This time, Maggie Connors had the lone goal of the opening period, picking off a pass with just more than a minute to go, taking it down the ice past a pair of Quinnipiac defenders and threading it underneath Bobcats netminder Abbie Ives to put Princeton in front.
Quinnipiac scored twice in the second period and held that 2-1 lead until three minutes remained in the game. On a power play, Sarah Fillier and Claire Thompson cycled the puck around to Bullock near the faceoff dot to Ives' right, and Bullock blasted it home to square the game.
Quinnipiac scored just 1:45 into the OT, with a Vorster shot nicking Taylor House's blade and finding its way inside the post to Tiger netminder Stephanie Neatby's left.
It'll be the fourth time in five years that Princeton has gone the distance in the ECAC quarterfinals, and the second time in that span against Quinnipiac. In 2017, Princeton bounced back from an OT loss to the Bobcats at Baker in the first game to win the next two and advance.
