Hiltunen's Double-OT Goal Seals Win over Columbia
October 16, 2021 | Women's Soccer
Princeton and Columbia battled for 100 scoreless minutes on a rainy night at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium, and the game wouldn't last through a 101st minute.
Just after the second overtime began, Lily Bryant intercepted a Columbia pass around midfield and sent it forward for Alexis Hiltunen, who raced ahead and chipped the ball toward goal from 20 yards out, getting the only score of the game as Princeton picked up three big points in the Ivy League title race and its 10th win of the season overall.
"Tonight's game was a quintessential Ivy League battle," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "Both teams dug deep in very challenging conditions and, ultimately, the game was decided on two special plays: Grace Barbara's save in the second half and Lexi Hiltunen's goal to start the second overtime. I thought both teams defended really well and also created a handful of good chances to win. While I would have liked us to execute better in the final third, I can never fault the desire this team has to compete everywhere on the field."
The win allowed Princeton to keep pace in the Ivy League race at 3-1, even with Harvard and one game behind Brown heading into the final three weeks of Ivy play. The Tigers will go to Harvard next Saturday at 1 p.m.
The goal was Hiltunen's fourth of the year and third in the team's last five games.
Princeton will step out of Ivy League play on Tuesday at Lehigh for a 5 p.m. start.
