Men's Soccer Rallies By Brown, 3-1
October 09, 2021 | Men's Soccer
Princeton (5-5-0, 2-0-0 Ivy), gave up a tough-luck goal in the first half at Brown, but did not wilt while putting together a furious rally in Providence to best Brown, 3-1.
With the win, the Tigers remain in first place in the Ivy League with six points -- both wins coming on the road to give Princeton a 2-0-0 start to Ivy play for the first time since 2010.
The Tigers dominated possession in the game, taking 20 shots to just eight from the Bears. Princeton finished with nine shots on goal, scoring on three. Kevin O'Toole had seven shots, two of which landed on goal. Daniel Diaz-Bonilla had five shots and three shots on goal.
Lucas Gen headed home the equalizer in the 55th minute to level the match at 1-1. He finished off a set piece, knocking home a looping, well-placed service from Kevin O'Toole. The ball from the captain sailed over the entire gaggle of players in the box, and found Gen who had separated from his defender with enough space now to get up and head the ball back against the grain and inside the far right post.

Just over eight minutes later, the Tigers took the lead off the left foot of Daniel Diaz-Bonilla. Swarming defense from Princeton forced a Brown turnover and sent the Orange and Black the other way. James Wangsness started the run and eventually the ball found Frankie DeRosa who slid a pass into space toward Diaz-Bonilla. The striker then attacked his defender, tossed in a few step over fakes and uncorked a left-footed laser to the left post for the lead.

Kevin O'Toole added an insurance marker in the 79th minute, finishing off a gritty sequence with his first of the season. He started the play with a good run across the box, but that chance was staved off by Brown. The Tigers would halt any transition from the Bears, and a cross from Diaz-Bonilla headed towards the box where DeRosa and Brown's keeper collided while going for the loose ball. The ricochet found O'Toole who volleyed a ball through a pair of Bears and into the net.

The Bears took a lead in the 31st minute on a goal credited to Kojo Dadzie after a Will Crain service clanged off Dadzie and then the right post before sneaking by a diving Jack Roberts. The Tigers had done a good job of recovering after a first attempt by Brown, and Dadzie was not really in a position to score himself but was in the right place to redirect a service with speed from Crain.
The Tigers had a chance to tie before the end of the first half following a dangerous free kick from Issa Mudashiru in the 41st minute. Brown's keeper knocked the kick down, but did not hang on to the ball and it fluttered over to Kevin O'Toole who looped a ball over the scrum to the far post where a Princeton attacker was alone but missed on his shot to stymie the scoring chance.
Princeton returns to Sherrerd Field on October 16, hosting Columbia at 4 p.m.
