No. 8 Princeton Corners Monmouth For 6-1 Win
October 05, 2022 | Field Hockey
The Princeton field hockey team drew a penalty corner in the third quarter and then another immediately after that … and didn't score on either. After the way the first half went, this was somewhat shocking.
Princeton, the eighth-ranked team in the country by both the coaches' poll and the RPI, scored four first half goals, all on penalty corners, and rolled to a 6-1 win over Monmouth in West Long Branch, giving the Tigers three road wins in the last six days. The win over Monmouth came a year after the Hawks had dealt Princeton a crushing overtime loss in Princeton to derail the Tigers' 2021 NCAA tournament hopes.
The rematch was all Tigers, and it was because of the precision and power of the penalty corner unit. It started when Grace Schulze, the reigning Ivy Offensive Player of the Week, tipped in a drive from Ophelie Bemelmans to make it 1-0 midway through the first quarter.
By the time the half ended, it was 4-0 Tigers, as Sammy Popper and Beth Yeager twice drove the ball into the cage. Bemelmans had three first-half assists, while Schulze had two of her own.
Freshman Ella Hampson, who had come close to her first career goal several times in the last two games, swatted in a rebound off a Schulze shot to make it 5-1 early in the fourth. The lead became 6-1 when Autumn Brown tipped in a drive from Yeager — off another penalty corner.
The win improved Princeton to 8-4 on the year and came in the final non-league game of the season. The Tigers have five Ivy League games remaining, beginning Saturday at home against Dartmouth at noon. Princeton, Cornell and Harvard are all 2-0 in the league.
